Oh, and what about Ambrose's goal? The beauty of it was not necessarily just the strike, but how he avoided 3 defenders then hit it.
Nice.
As it went they didn't and it cost us.
He's, on the whole, extremely solid and rarely makes mistakes. He also makes up for these mistakes with more-than-occasional fantastic stops that many other keepers in the league wouldn't get to.
Bowyer also deserves his place in the team, and I don't know how you can say he doesn't gamble (he didn't as much today due to Kluivert's presence) as I've seen him arriving late in Scholes-esque fashion so many times this season. He's well on his way to fully re-kindling his amazing form at Leeds.
If I were to remove one player (other than the center backs) from the Newcastle side after that performance, it'd be Kluivert. He looked somewhat lethargic and didn't really do an awful lot. I would stick Jenas in for him next game and have Bowyer arriving late, AND Jenas going forward too at times.
Or you could always throw Ameobi in; a player with fantastic talent of which I think is too often overlooked.
I'm not one for picking Given up on mistakes as he is usually an outstanding goal keeper. He didn't have the best of games today though which is why on another day I feel that we would have got at least a point as their two goals would have been dead certs that he would have made an cleared.
Just wish there wasn't the Tblisi game on Thursday, wanting to get the Fulham match underway so that I can forget about this evening. Been a while since I have been really disappointed with the way they played.
However, I disagree about Given. I don't know what it is, but in the last 25 games I've seen Newcastle play (admitaly some had that Kershaw or whatever guy in goal) I'd began to accumulate some instances where Given appeared to be afraid of comitting his body and a couple of dodgy kicks. Positioning-wise, dashing out, shot stopping and claiming he's fine.
he does on a regular basis. Behind that defence Given has a lot to do and if it wasn't for him the goals against would be far greater than what it is at the moment.
Bowyer has been fantastic this season, his 3 Man of the Match awards in the last 10 games goes to show how well he is playing. What you may not see is how him and Butt inter-change with each other going forward. Both can defend which allows the other to push on and score and the sheer amount of running he does warrants his place in the team. When Jenas is fit the Midfield pretty much picks itself with Butt, Bowyer and Jenas.
I thought Given perhaps could have made
> a better effort with both goals, extremely unusual for him no to have
> a solid game.
I've noticed recently how he is becoming increasingly more inconsistent and has real problem with comitting his body to a cause and performs sloppy kicks.
Yet another example highlighting how we need to get 2
> solid central defenders in January.
Just what I was thinking. I think you need to sign one before then though. That way it would create competition for places, before he's even signed. Plus it would lift the media and fans.

I don't think there has been one game where Bowyer has been positive enough for him to merit me not thinking of replacing him. Centre-back's a priority though.

Yeah, the second inparticular. Should have either come and smothered it or stayed on his line. Like you said, though, he's normally class.
Aside from the lovely goal from Amborse Newcastle were poor today. I dont think Butt and Bowyer had control of the Midfield and when Bolton broke they always looked dangerous.
Main trouble came from Okocha throw-ins and dead ball situations as no one could get a hold of the ball.
Thought that there was a point in it and even that we could have gone on to win the game after the Ambrose goal.
Push on towards Fulham next Sunday to keep pressue of the 3rd and 4th spots.
Hardly a stellar game.
