This sequel rocked the arcades when it was released around the country, swallowing hundreds of pounds of punters money and giving little kids nightmares that will last at least until they see Resident Evil: Code Veronica. As you enter the city in your silver convertable, you are greeted less than warmly by Judgement, the flying demon and master of Kuarl. The game opens out in to a tense shoot 'em up, with multiple routes through the deserted streets accessed by saving the few remaining humans from becoming zombie chow. Some of these people you rescue will award you with health bonuses, but if you accidentally shoot them while trying to blow a mutant off their tail, you will lose life. The varying types of zombies have different weak points, and if you are serious about reaching the final boss with more than 1 continue, you will need to learn where these are - some of the hideous freaks don't have a particular 'achillies heel', they only require one shot to be dispatched back to where they belong.
The end of level guardians offer more taxing challenges than the standard 'pull the trigger as many times as you can' and have different attack patterns which you need to discover which leave them vulnerable at various times, however, hit and hope is still to easy to get away with. The game does increase in difficulty towards the final showdown, and the last 2 bosses will leave you cringing as you realise the power of their assaults, but determined not to let them beat you, you'll keep going back for more. Rather than port the arcade version directly, this game has actually been improved graphically, with more background detail, and there are some extra modes in there exclusive to the home version.
These include a Boss mode, in which you try to defeat all the bosses to unlock extra options, and this is great practice for the arcade version of the game. You can also try the original mode, which you play through like the arcade game, but allows the use of extra items - for example, more continues or bullets in the chamber of your gun. Careful though, once these are gone, you can't reuse them. Although many people will question the game's lifespan, there is much more than just the straight arcade game on this GD-ROM. The light-gun is set to become the DC standard, and after playing a few times, youv will still keep going back - 1) Because you are determined not to let a horde of half-dead flesh eaters get the better of you and 2) Because is is just so FUN!! Buy it, enjoy it, complete it, then play it again. A classic.
