Donny's alarm whined irritatingly, as it did every day at exactly 10:17am. He had become accustomed to getting up at 10:17am ever since he finished High School, after he coincidentally woke up at this time three days in a row.
The time was significant because on those three days he'd enjoyed what he believed were the happiest times in his life.
He successfully levelled up on EverQuest for three days in a row, he received his rare Magic: The Gathering card from an eBay seller and the components for his new computer arrived. "Fantastic", he thought to himself, and set his alarm-clock to 10:17am, hoping he would be able to repeat this happiness every day in the future.
Four years had passed since then and Donny was no longer so enthusiastic.
He got up and walked over to his computer.
He brought it out of standby and logged into MSN. The usual suspects were online, but he didn't much feel like talking to them.
10:30am. A noise from the door, footsteps on the stairs.
It was his mother.
"Breakfast, darling?"
"Yes mother."
"I have it right here for you."
He turned around to see her already standing there with his morning meal.
He always had his breakfast at 10:30am, and he always had the same thing.
Donny ate, and prepared to sign onto EverQuest at 10:42am. This was another of his customs, and not one he was willing to break.
He played for a few hours, but something was different.
He lacked the enthusiasm for the game that he used to have. It didn't seem as important or as fun as it used to be. Everything seemed repetitive, predictable. Donny had never seen himself as one to follow convention, he wouldn't be like those jocks who'd teased him for being overweight. He couldn't help it, it was glandular.
He wandered around the EverQuest world.
There didn't seem to be anything to do, anyone to talk to.
"Shat", Donny typed into the chatbox.
"Ass"
"Fook"
"Balls"
"This is the swear police. You may not swear on EverQuest."
Donny had done something different and adventurous for the first time in years. He ran, trying to avoid the police. He failed.
In a fit of anger he swiped everything off his desk with his arm.
"Gah".
He had knocked over his prized Magic: The Gathering collection.
"Who cares?" thought Donny.
This wasn't the same person as it had been yesterday, or the day before.
He spied a lighter in the corner, just making it out in the darkness.
Donny's room was always dull, he only ever switched on one light, since he found too much light very distracting.
"I'll brighten the place up a bit today", he thought, smirking.
First of all he would have to get his parents.
He called for them to come down and talk to him, locking the door behind them as they walked in.
"I think we need to redecorate this place, mother"
"Really, Donny?"
She seemed excited. Her son had been a recluse for all these years - no job, no friends that she'd ever met or heard about and nothing she could think of that was really worth remembering. She sensed the change in Donny, thinking that he seemed to be ready to grab life with both hands.
"Yes, it's very dark down here, don't you think?"
He began stacking his Magic: The Gathering cards on the floor, the ones in his main deck and the useless ones he'd disregarded and left in a cupboard all these years.
"I won't be needing these anymore."
He set fire to them.
"What are you doing?!"
"Hush, mother. Everything is great."
"Donny?"
His father tried to step on the small fire.
"NO!" Donny screamed, and jabbed the taser he'd bought off the internet into his dad's back.
His mother jumped back, horrified at her son's actions.
He walked over to her and kissed her on the lips.
"My mother, my only ever love. You don't need him. We'll be together forever."
The fire caught his bed, his desk, his books.
It spread through the room.
The flames rose up as he tightly held his mother against his body.
The End.
> Disturbing but good. I thought the ending was fine too, no need for it
> to drag on.
Good stuff.
Ending seemed a bit rushed. But it was good... Although slightly scary.
