To all the consumers who complain that all the games that are released nowadays are 1st person shoot 'em ups or driving games, the simple reason is that no publishers are willing to risk piling thousands of pounds in to marketing if the game may not take off. Parrapa was a great exception to this rule, as are some new dreamcast games (Marracas anyone?), but if the gaming market is to really progress then developers and publishers must be willing to take a few risks. If you are desperate then one of the best courses of action is to track down your local arcade or get an import machine from Japan. The far east has no shortage of original games, most of which will never see the light of day on these fair shores.
How about it then publishers? Stick your neck out and bring some more original titles to the western world.

One year on...

Things seem to have improved a lot, and originality seems to be a major factor in the decisions a lot of developers (a lot, not all) take into account when producing games for today's European markets.

The Japanese still seem to get all the whacky genres though, not fair, we need more than just Samba and Fireworks and Swearing Squirrels to keep us interested and the games developing.

More new genres please, even though you developers seem to be trying a bit harder nowadays. They must have an ear in these forums I reckon...
