I was wandering the house as i often do at night and for some reason Room 101 came into my head and i was thinking about what i'd put in there.
The first thing that came to mind almost instantly was religion, normal reasons of war, rascism and division and then i got to thinking about the other side of the coin, what would a world without religion be like, would it really be anymore peaceful, if you accept there is no judgement at the end, no reason to good, would things fall apart ?
We already live in a largely faithless country where only the aged and the minority believe in anything other than what they see so would it make any difference ?
I could ramble on about morality, inspiration or self-responsibility but i'll leave that for you.
Religion a good thing or not ?

I dunno, better off without it I suppose. Not that I advocate a complete loss of spirituality, just everyone to find thier own, and I suppose a lot of people do find it through organised religion...so hmmm...

We wouldn't turn into a society of raging psychopaths if we got rid of religion. It'd just be a more honest society. People would be acting according to their own beliefs, rather than acting in a certain way because they believe their god has told them to.

A while ago I was speaking to some people on here, Insane Bartender being one of the main protagonists, and I said that no act can be wrong objectively. IB took issue with this, and said it was people like me that society needed to worry about. He couldn't grasp the fact that just because I'd said nothing was wrong objectively (unless you want to achieve a certain end) that I didn't have my own set of moral standards, beliefs, opinions, principles etc to live my life to. Just because I don't think anything is wrong objectively doesn't mean I'm going to go out and kill the nearest person for the fun of it. This is comparative to the religious issue, I feel.

Religion is like a non-existant gun.
You can threaten people with it as much as you like, but unless they believe it's real, they really don't care. At best, you'll just scare them into playing along.

And if you point it as someone and pull the trigger, it blows off your face.

Considering we are taught to respect other people's belief on this subjuct, it's incredible how many people still use it as a reason to fight.

Where's the religious honour in that? What religion suggests "destroy all who do not believe as we do"? None, so what exactly are they fighting over.

The other reason for war, of course, is oil, but the less said about that the better.

If people didn't use religion to to manipulate people then they'd find something else.

I mean, look at the west.
How religion led are we?
Now read Goatboy's topic to see how we're just as easily manipulated.

Anysway, religion is like a gun.
Not a bad thing in itself and 90-99% of people use it sensibly, but it takes only that minority to abuse it to do some serious damage.
