The Nintendo Gameboy Advanced has stunned us with its excellent multiplayer options particularly in games such as Mario Kart Advanced and F-zero Advanced. You can now battle with up to four chums but what is most interesting, is that with most Gameboy Advanced games you can play multiplayer with your mates only using one game!

This idea of Nintendo’s is an excellent one and it gives me an idea. Internet gaming is to appear in most next generation consoles and gaming with about 20 people you have never met before will be possible. But how cool would it be if all 20 people could play, lets say Quake 3 but only one of them actually owns the game! Someone could load the required areas, weapons, characters etc… onto the web and we could play it even if we don’t have it. Of course not all of the game will be accessible only the multiplayer areas and even then only certain parts of it can be played making it a bit like an online demo.

Developers shouldn’t mind, as it is an excellent form of advertisement as one person owning the game could persuade another 19 to get it!

You may remember I have already discussed the idea of 3rd party developers like Sega making a game for Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, and making it possible for all 3 consoles to battle against each other using that game. This would make the war zone that is the gaming community a lot more peaceful. But despite this I believed that there is no way a Sony game could be played over the Internet using a Gamecube, as Sony wouldn’t make games for their rivals.

But what if Nintendo and Sony made a game possible to use a different control system to suit their rival’s controllers and play that game across the Internet using different consoles. For example lets say the next Perfect Dark game can use the Internet, it also has a control option to suit the Playstation’s controller. A Gamecube owner could load up a multiplayer game on to the Internet and a Playstation owner could play it.

But why would Nintendo and Sony do this? Well the opportunity for Sony to persuade Nintendo fans to buy a PS2 and Nintendo to persuade Sony fans to buy a Gamecube is an opportunity both sides would be keen to do so although this idea may be farfetched it is possible.

If something like this happens then the future of gaming could be very bright indeed!

Ninty pulled out after the failure of the Sega CD add on and the failure of the CDi they didn't think it would work...

Agreed, it does make it all possible, but not for, maybe, 7-8 years or so.

It would be good, and it will be possible, it all depends whether the games companies agree with our opinions!

Yep Ninty pulled out though oh and YH i talked about Sega making the same game for all 3 and making it possible top battlebetween the 3.

Just look a little further into the future. Microsoft plan, eventually, to have windows boot from the net - to have everything stored there on some great big server. Seems ambitious, but they plan to do it. If consoles did a similar thing, then it would be quite easy to have the sort of set-up dringo suggested.

All you need is bandwidth - and most computer experts predict that bandwtidh will not be an issue in the future. Whether that means ten years, twenty years or what, I'm not sure - but it does make all this possible.

They did. Im not sure of the details bit i think it went something like:

Nintendo released the SNES. Nintendo approached Sony to make a CD based add-on for the SNES. Development starts. Nintendo pull out (not sure why). Sony carry on. PSX is released.

Dringo, i can see your point. It seems a really good idea.

The only thing is, Nintendo and Sony won't work together, at least i doubt it.

What you may find, is that Sega release a game, like PSO, on all platforms. It may, by coincedance, just happen to work online with all platforms.

The thing is, it will take an independant company to do it. To be honest, although there are many good software developers out there, I feel it will take Sega to get it right.

Going on to your point about multiplayer game demos over the 'net, that is a good idea. The only problem i can forsee is that people may not have quick enough 'net connections to be able to play. How so? Well, they will have to download the levels, textures, skins, mods etc. As the most common method of connection to the internet is a 56k modem, this could take quite some time.

For example, a UT Deathmatch level, zipped up, can be anything from 400k to 1.2 meg. On top of this are texture files, sound files etc. A demo of Q3 Team Arena weighed in at around 140MB!! Most of that information would be needed to play over the 'net.

It seems impractical to be able to do that, due to the size of the files involved.

The idea about only one person having a copy of the game would also have this problem, as the other players would need to get hold of this information somehow.
