As it says on the tin - I'm after an external for my laptop. SR have quite a large one for £120, but I'd never heard of the make. PC World have one that's slightly more expensive, but much larger, and FireWire. So I'm not sure - any recommendations?

I did think about that, actually, but haven't looked any up yet. Cheers for reminding me though.

Its worth noting, you can buy an external USB 2 HD enclosure for 20-30 pounds and then you can buy and plug in any HD you like. Apart from being able to save yourself a few pounds over one that comes with a HD already in it, the biggest advantange is that you can switch HDs if you like.
Yes you can do that with those that come with the HD, but opening it up to switch the HD invalidates your warranty usually.

I'm going to use it to store all my music and stuff - media mainly. I'll burn all my CD's to it, plus suck mp3s off anyone that comes within 'sucking distance'...the length of the USB wire...

Depends how big the files are, wont make too much difference though a few seconds at most usually.

Ooh, Dabs have the 300GB Maxtor/Firewire for £180 - we have a w1nn0r!

The spindle speed is slightly lower (5200, down from 7200) - that won't make too much difference though, right?

Erm, they are one of the largest hard drive manufacturers in the world, i use one, my brother uses one, turbonutter uses one (possibly several).

Basically, you can trust them.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.

Nothing but admiration. I have been complimented on the church site that I manage through you and everybody thinks I am an IT genius. Your support is unquestionably outstanding.
