Firman takes victory as conditions affect results

Ralf Firman converts pole position into victory and that keeps Jordan in the hunt for the Constructors Championship. Conditions were tricky with the race starting wet and drying out towards the end.

Although it looked like Baumgartner was really suffering under the pressure, everyone else was throwing it all away and Baumgartner finished in 5th place to become the SR F1 World Champion!

The drama started early when Raikkonen and Pizzonia threw their cars off the track in spins. Raikkonen then developed a puncture on lap 6 to retire. After a big Michael Schumacher spin, Button spins in front of Da Matta, causing an accident. Button had to retire on lap 11, ending his Championship challenge but Da Matta kept going, needing a new front wing.

Fisichella was the next to spin but Pantano was the first to crash out of the race in the slippery conditions. He slammed into the wall on lap 17. Frentzen then had the first of two off the track excursions before Michael Schumacher went off the track and crashed into the barriers heavily on lap 21 to retire.

Baumgartner was following Verstappen closely with Minardi's in first and second until Baumgartner threw it off the track. He rejoined but the Minardi 1-2 was ended when Verstappen retired with a water leak on lap 28. Baumgartner was still in the top 3 and he could breathe a little easier when Salo spun while chasing down the leading pack.

Fisichella retired when he crashed into a wall on lap 29. Montoya retired on the same lap when he crashed into a wall, followed by a Frentzen spin. Ralf Schumacher ended a horrible race for Williams when he crashed out on lap 34. Da Matta and Panis both had spins before Villeneuve had a major off, ending his chance of victory and staying in the title race.

Two late retirements saw Pizzonia retire with a loose left front wheel on lap 42 and Coulthard retired with a loose left rear wheel on lap 46.

Firman's victory gives Jordan an outside chance of retaining the Constructors Championship and Heidfeld will be looking to go one better than his 2003 final Championship position after 2nd place in the race. Bruni's 3rd place and Sato's 4th place wasn't enough to keep Jaguar in the Constructors Championship but it was a good result nonetheless. Baumgartner's 5th place seals the World Championship with one race remaining and he'll have to fight to secure Minardi's first Constructors Championship in Monaco. Barrichello's 6th place wasn't enough and he'll be looking to get the runners up position in the Championship and the Constructors Championship for Renault in his best ever season. De La Rosa in 7th and Salo in 8th gave MG F1 a few points but it's heartbreak for Salo as Baumgartner is now too far ahead.

PREDICTION WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Only a minor miracle could stop Der Nazi from taking the Prediction World Championship. Did it happen? With an extra point for the closest to the tie breaker, let's find out:

1st Foreman 10pts + 1pt (20pts - +0.135s) - THE CLOSEST
2nd Ineedsleep 8pts (18pts - +0.666s)
3rd Badgerman 6pts (13pts - +0.929s)
4th Der Nazi 5pts (10pts - +0.668s)
5th Chris 4pts (10pts - +1.686s)
6th Jae 3pts (8pts - +0.893s)
7th Mike Swade 2pts (7pts)

The table now looks like this:

1st Der Nazi - 107pts (4 wins) - PREDICTION WORLD CHAMPION
2nd Ineedsleep – 91pts (1 win)
3rd Foreman – 77pts (3 wins)
4th Chris – 73pts (3 wins)
5= Mike Swade – 71pts (2 wins)
5= Jae – 71pts (2 wins)
7th Badgerman – 57pts (1 win)
8th Biggie Little – 49pts (1 win)
9th Absolut Neo – 14pts
10th Azul – 11pts
11th RoJ – 8pts
12th Virtuoso – 7pts
13th Icarus – 6pts
14th Wakka – 4pts
15th Notorious Biggles – 1pt

Congratulations to Foreman on the victory, mostly down to his correctly guessing that Firman would get pole position. Well done to Ineedsleep for guessing that Raikkonen would be the first retirement and Badgerman for correctly guessing that De La Rosa would make up the most positions in the race.

Congratulations go to Der Nazi for winning the Prediction World Championship! The prize is, of course, the Prediction World Championship and with Baumgartner winning the Drivers Championship, Der Nazi is entitled to claim that as his own, as no one owns Baumgartner.

The results of the vote are in for the weather conditions of Round 18:

1 – Dry
2 - Random
2 – Rain

It's my decision between Random conditions and Rain for the entire weekend. I've decided that Rain for the entire weekend should provide the most drama and will be a fitting end to the season.

Round 18 is at Monaco. The Prediction Thread is already up and you have until Saturday. Please enter your predictions. The Constructors Championship is the only thing left to be decided and 8 teams still have mathematical chances of winning it. Join me for the final round of the SR F1 season. The Qualifying will be posted Saturday and the Race will be posted Sunday, to co-incide with the real Round 18. Thank you for supporting the SR F1 Championship!

Aw...damn! Barrichello can't become the World Champion. Ah well, I'll be happy with 2nd, or 3rd for that matter, and hopefully Renault can win the constructor's championship. Congratulations to Der Nazi!

Nice race GP and congrats Der Nazi.

Of course you could always refuse the title and demand the runner up claims it :D

Actually I'm quite chuffed with second place in the prediction, especially as I only have one win. Silly, I know, but there you go.
