Brandon Routh Confirmed as Superman!
Source: Variety October 20, 2004

While Latino Review broke the news last weekend, the Hollywood trades have confirmed with their sources that relative unknown actor Brandon Routh will be taking on the title role in Warner Bros. Pictures' Superman. Director Bryan Singer and crew are headed to Australia next month to begin production.

Routh's credits include One Life to Live, Gilmore Girls, Will & Grace and Cold Case. He recently wrapped his first feature role in Deadly, starring opposite That '70s Show star Laura Prepon.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Sun-Times says that the film's screenwriter, Dan Harris, revealed new details about the plot.

"He'll begin in his late 20s. He lost his powers in 'Superman 2' and now he has the powers back. But something has happened because he's been away for a long time," says Harris. "We're taking off from the first two Superman films with Christopher Reeve. We use his history and then move on with big twists and great special effects.

He adds that they are "not going to do the origin story again. Our view is if you're over 25 years old, then you've seen the Reeve films and that's Superman to you. If you're under 25, then you watch TV's 'Smallville,' and that's Superman to you."

I wasn't sure if they'd do the origins of Superman, but I certainly didn't think they'd make it a direct sequel to Superman 2, ignoring 3 and 4 and setting it in modern times (hence him "being away for a long time") Is this good or bad?

edit - I'm under 25 and have seen the Reeve film, but don't watch Smallville because it bores me...

I hope for the sake of his career he doesn't get typecast (arguably like Piers Brosnan in recent years, doesn't do much but Bond films).

How many more comic book heroes can they resurrect for blockbusters? =P

I'm surprised they chose something with little credentials, but he sorta has "the look" of Superman. Singer directing it gives me a lot of faith. Shame he ditched X3, though :0(

I saw all the superman films and I don't watch Smallville, and I'm only 18. Their demographic is a bit off - I'd say that 18-25yr olds remember Superman as the guy from the Adventures of Superman series, with Teri Hatcher as Louis Lane.

When Reeve was paralysed, my mum woke me up and told me, like straight away (She tended to wake me up telling me a random news story of teh day) and I knew who it was.
I was like 7 at the time.
And I never watch Smallville.
The Superman I most recognise as Superman is the one from the "Adventures of Superman" series.
Funnily enough, and the cartoon one.

Brandon Routh is Superman?
Damn, all the shows and films and cartoons convinced me it was CLark Kent.
I've been mislead!!
