Could anyone advise me as to how you stop hackers getting in to your PC and taking over, and is there any way to know if they have been in? I have got all the usual stuff on like AVG, Ad-aware and Spysweaper but I think someone has got into my machine what can I do to stop them and how can I tell?

This will keep you safe.
Other than that just keep your firewall up to date, run your anti virus often and use your ad-aware and spycleaners, maybe also check out prevx as an addition you your spy blocking stuff.
Google toolbar is good as it blocks pop ups which in certain cases contain spyware or scripts to carry out certain tasks.
Watch what you do online too, avoid sites that aren't protected and avoid downloading anything you don't want or opening attatchments from e-mail if you are unaware of exactly what they are and who they are from.

Keep Windows fully patched at all times, and always run a firewall (preferably a hardware router or firewall).
