My computer has been doing my tree in recently, but my latest problem consists of me clicking 'post this message' at the bottom of this page, and the button staying 'depressed' for about 10 seconds (as though the PC is doing something or has crashed), before it 'undepresses' and the next page loads.

Is it this site specifically, or is it my god forsaken piece of crap PC? (more likely).

If so, what the hell? Please help techies, before I kick my tower repeatedly.

Than'ya please ... :)

I get a total of 19 virus ridden files showing every time I run a scan.

but that's because I downloaded the latest version of Sub7 recently, and have it tucked away in a zip file.

I put it on my mates PC when I lived at a doss house with 3 other people, and had a laugh with that.

I was able to see his webcam, open his CD drive, disable his keyboard, play sounds through his speakers and type text on the screen.

he wasn't exactly PC savvy so it worked a treat.

Of course, firewalls stop you using it, so it's only really useful on LANs unfortunately.

AVG has its wierd moments, whenever I leave my PC alone for more than 10 minutes, it starts a background scan and alerts me that there is a virus, it then says please run AVG.

Whenever I run the complete AVG test however it comes up with absolutely nothing.

Each time I get an update for AVG the identified "virus" changes.

Wierd.

Update :

When I run adaware, about mid way through the scan AVG pops up to tell me there is a virus in the adaware program folder, or one of its sub-folders. This happens every time. So I completely deleted the adaware folder and ran a full virus scan using AVG, which came up negative. I also ran reg-mechanic just to see if there were any problems there, also negative.

I then installed adaware again and ran an adaware scan, and the SAME virus alert popped up at the same point in the scan.

What the hell is going on? I even tried deleting the windows restore backup file, as I have had scenarios in the past where a virus stores itself in this file.

And the same old delaying problem when browsing this site. I can usually post a few messages before it starts happening which is odd.

PC's are so much fun at times.

Does the problem only occur in Internet Explorer? If it does, you'd probably be best off switching to another browser i.e. Mozilla, Firefox or Opera. It could be that nothing short of a Windows reinstall would cure the problem otherwise, as IE is highly integrated into Windows. Something very deep in the browser/OS has gone senile, as it is often want to do, and these problems can be difficult/impossible to fix.

XP is better all round. Use the task manager to see what is taking up all the CPU cycles. On Windows 9x then it just showed running programs, NT, 2000 and XP all show what percentage is being used by processes. That way, you can identify the main offender.

XP, chief. I did download a screensaver recently and it installed a load of none-sensical crap that I (hoped I) deleted.

Will give adaware and reg-mechanic a run and see if it solves it anyway. cheers for the input.

Never even saw this post before.

Right, so what operating system are you running? Windows 98 I presume. Internet Explorer your browser?

Generally when a machine is running slowly, it is because there is something else at a high priority grabbing the processor. Run Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search & Destroy and AVG to find pretty much every piece of malware there is. With them gone, use RegCleaner to tidy up the registry from things you've already uninstalled. Defrag.

Of course, the fastest way to cure things is to re-install Windows.

Cheers for your replies.

*winces with disgust*

I'd forgotten all about this problem (I was drunk when it happened), until just now when it started happening again.

Now I'm wondering how my PC tower casing will hold up against a flurry of increasingly more urgent and furious blows from human fists.
