I've got a firewall (sygate) on the recommendations of several people in general chat, but they're useless when it comes to technicalness, so I need to know should I allow access to the internet for "Win32 Services (svchost.exe)" ? It looks like a general programme but my friend assures me it's a Funner worm. Not a clue if he's right or not, so the popup box is still on the screen.

Also I'd like to know if a programme called "Yfk8" (system32/yfk8.exe) should be running on startup? I dont think it should but I dont want to turn off an important system process if indeed it is one.

Advice appreciated lots.

Unless it's been taken over by something. It requests a lot of access, which I can't see it would require. Why would a application loader need any net access?

Yeah, try blocking it... it might be linked to the windows updater thingie where they fix exploits and stuff that hackers get into.

Well if you read this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314056 then it seems illogical that it would require internet access to do its job.

I'd like to see a list of what Windows default programs are on startup, then see what I've got and do a comparison - they should have a * next to them or something, everything is so unclear at the moment.

I think the thing is a device that loads utilities on startup, but it doesnt necesarilly require internet access, so I've disabled it and I've not died, yet.

svchost.exe runs on all WinXP programs I think (at least it does on mine - if it is a worm I'm in the crapper too).

Yfk8 sounds a bit ominous - uncheck it in the startup tab (go to Run and type "msconfig") and see what happens, might be a bit of spyware or something that's crept onto your system.
