Go go go! Okay, sh*t joke ;)

Looks absolutely freaking awesome though. Loved the 2-D versions, Swat 3 is s**till one of my favourite PC offline games and this really does look like it will bring the series bang into the next gen of gaming. It is open as of Friday morning so I jus**t hope by the time I get in from work that those greedy American inbreeds get their lazy unemployed hands on it.

Not sure how popular Swat is amongs**t you lot but jus**t wanted to give you a heads up that doesn't involve your boyfriend's anal gland ;)

Wouldn't bother downloading it to be honest. There is only one map and there seems to be a bug with the servers as pretty much all the pings are 150ish despite most of the hosts having 30-100mb/s connections with high upload speeds.

The game itself is difficult to judge as it still feels pretty rough around the edges. The character movement is verrrrrry slow which makes the walk function a complete waste of time as you are pretty much crawling at a laughable pace. The weapons are excellent however, as are the visuals although as I understand a lot has been done with the shader effects since the Beta.

Control wise you can set it up how you want as with nearly all PC games. As with all FPS games it does favour the usual layout only you can't actually jump with your character so Space or Right Shift can be assigned to something else. You can completely customise the visuals right down to the shader version however it runs completely smooth on Very High at 1280 x 1024 on my rig and judging by the others they also have no trouble hitting the top frame rates.

The big draw back however is with the fact there can only be 16 players per map as it is meant to be an all out tactical game which differs greatly from the action>>tactical gameplay in Counter-Strike.

I would imagine quite a bit of polish will be added to the multi-player section between now and release as it isn't always 100% clear if you are killing someone on your team or the other team as the dark blue and dark red SWAT/Terrorist outfits are barley distinguishable at mid range and it seems to be a bit hit and miss as to whether the enemies name will appear when you move the mouse cursor over him.

Now this is the awesome part...

On a positive spin the hostage rescue mode is fantastic, a lot more advanced than Counter-Strike. The hostage starts in a neutral position on the map so it isn't a case of just base camping or setting up around where the hostage is located; instead you have to get to the hostage as quickly as possible. As the Terrorist capturing the hostage you can issue warnings to SWAT about what you will do to the hostage and even issue ransom demands which if met completely alter the face of the game. This in reality is f**king excellent, this mode alone will keep this game varied enough to warrant a play along side Counter-Strike.

This is only a one map multi-player beta with pretty much all gameplay options turned off so with the draw backs over-looked I really think it is going to prove to be a tactical master-piece. IGN had a feature yesterday on how it will be different to other tactical games the focus on action as much as they do strategy. Can't wait to get my hands on the single player, tis shaping up very nicely.

Didn't care much for SWAT 2, but SWAT 3 was brilliant. A tactical shooter where you fought a war on crime as apposed to the generic War on Terror. I loved being able to disarm and capture criminals rather than go in guns blazing and kill everyone. It always felt more rewarding to win a level without firing a shot.

Nice to see a sequel underway, it was looking uncertain for a bit when they stupidly dumbed the series down for that forgettable PS2 release last year. Nice to see they're back on tack with things.
