Over the past couple of months I have been thinking, why cant I make my own Domain. Seeing as no one owns the internet, it should be fully possible to be able to make myself into a 'Self-Sufficient' domain registrar. Obviously I dont know how to do so and it is probably impossible. But how did people create address's like '.tk'?
Whats stopping me from creating my own address?
Surely the law or government have no control over this?
Just thinking/wondering.
Thanks,
James
PS - This isnt a how-to exactly, just wanted to know what the limits are and stuff.

One company tried this by slapping spyware on peoples pc's, I havent heard of them for over a year now but they offered alternative domain names only available through their software.

There are (or there were, might be more now) 13 root dns servers in the world, which are ultimately responsible for translating www.google.com into 66.102.11.99. Without the approval of these servers (or more specifically, the body that controls them) your .rofl domains ain't going nowhere.

In theory you can set up your own top level domain, ICANN does allow sponsored TLDs, if you've got the money, a good reason for such a TLD and infrastructure to manage it then you could do it.
You can see some of the current sponsored TLD applications if you

Go on, ask 'em.
Grrr...
*Makes own World Wide Web*
If so then no, you can't do it. Standards like .com. co.uk .org etc all have to be approved by the world wide web consortium before they are added to the DNS structure.
