Firstly excuse me for not posting this in FOG, but Im not a regular yet, Ive been here for 21 days and have posted WAY over the word requirement but just not enough posts. Im even #80 in the top posters..but oohh no.

Anyway. Freeware, as Im so cheap I only usually buy budget games, like the other day I got American McGees Alice, Hitman: Codename 47, and Project IGI, for £10. What can I say? Im a student. Anyway, thanks to my new boradband connection Im a big fan of freeware, something thats not all that common nowadays. Over the summer I found a site gamehippo.com, which has a HUGE selection of freeware games, but they're all not all that good. The BEST freeware games around are games that used to be retail, but the developers (or publishers, I dunno) decided to release it as freeware. A fine example of this is Hidden and Dangerous Deluse (full game with expansion). With the sequel out its been released to (in my opinion) promote the sequel. Maybe they just werent getting sales. I bought the origional game (gasp yes I know) and thoroughly enjoyed it (I ONLY HAD TO CHEAT ON ONE LEVEL...IN EASY...wow) but i didnt have the expansion so I downloaded this. yay. Another popular game thats freeware is Americas Army. Anyone remember that? It was released...um sometime over a year ago I think. It was sponsered and developed by the army as a promotional tool and said to be really realistic (even though there is no blood whatsoever and no screams of dying comerades) but it was such a flop its now freeware. lol. poor guys. Anyway its pretty s**t. lol. Theres offline training and online multiplayer..and thats it. The game is relatively slow (when compared to the likes of halo) but its still fun considering its freeware.

What p****s me off is that companies that released a game 5 years ago STILL wont let it go to freeware. Look. NOBODIES GOING TO BUY YOUR DAMM GAME! Maybe if it was a classic. Maybe. Anyway, I think more companies could win the hearts of gamers by releasing older games promoting newer ones, or including ads in the intros or something. Its true that some people (i.e me) would wait for it to go to freeware, but if they do it right it'll be ages before that happens. Anywho...thats about it. i think we should have more freeware. Then I wont get arrested for illegal downloads as much.

If you're downloading freeware then get something like AdAware/Zone Alarm to run so you can check for spyware. I downloaded some freeware a few years back and a good 25% contained spyware.

I was working in a patent attorneys office over the summer. It was mostly US utility patents, but most patents last about 10 years. They can be renewed but my understanding is that if the patent isnt pretty much the same, then you cant have the same patent on it. They'd have slight differences. Anyway, a patent is something like an invention, or a design. I think games would be copyrights, not patents.

That's a good point, but you wonder...when Nintendo re-releases software on the GBA (Zelda, Excitebike etc), is that a renewal of a patent or does that not count?

In any case people will download freeware stuff whether its legal or not most of the time - as long as nobody is looking =P

People already treat Mega Drive/Snes classics as freeware, through emulation.

The problem with freeware is that there's no money in it, so what's in it for the company who's spent a fortune in time and money develloping it?
That's why freeware will always be for the amatures and the retro.
Besides, there's no reason why amatures can't come up with some gems, but they'll never be able to make something as deep and complex as a paid professional.

By the by, what's the length of patenting on software?
Wasn't it as low as 15 years?

That means that most Nes games will be leagal freeware by now.
Doesn't it?
