whenever i connect to the internet, bt yahoo broadband, bar at the bottom always freezes for about 2 minutes the suddunly comes back to life. the main desktop part works, but not the bottom bit, so basilcally you can't do anything

That occasionally happens to me too. All I do is click on a link on the current page I'm on, it seems to then bring it all back working again. Frustrating I know.
