I've been thinking about the 'future of gaming' and come up with a possible direction. My question is, will there ever be a level of freedom so great that the player can go anywhere and do anything? Even though games claim to have moved on from being purely linear in structure, they still have a long way to go.
A lot of enjoyment can be got out of games in just exploring, and often, especially to older players, having to blast baddies in the process may be an irritation. In trying to create an environment where you can go absolutely anywhere you like, we will have to 'lose the plot', in other words forget about trying to tell some kind of story through the game. It is the goals in games - getting to the end and killing the big bad boss to save the world - which limit the player in doing whatever he/she wants, because they dictate that you have to go here or there and collect this or that before you can move on to the next level.
Perhaps it may be a while before they appear, but with the capacity of DVDs it will be possible to program, say an entire city, and you are free to go anywhere you like (as long as it has been programmed).
In the meantime I'm gonna pop a cap in some bad guy's head.
