Oh my God!

This is the greatest movie in the history of time.

I saw it last night on Fox289 (so it's likely to be shown again at some point).

Directed by zombie supremo George A. Romero and based on a Michael Stewart (who?) novel, it tells the tale of Allan Mann, who, after a nasty incident involving a truck, ends up as a quadriplegic.

He struggles at first to cope, and tries to commit suicide. His pal, Geoffrey, happens to be a scientist that works with monkeys. One he thinks is particularly smart (that he's been feeding human brains and stuff) he gets trained by a lass called Melanie. They call the monkey 'Ella', and she proves to be a great help, making phone calls, fetching books and giving loving cuddles.

Allan seems to be getting rather angry though, as you can expect, being stuck in a wheelchair - but Ella taps into this, and acts on his anger.

The first victim is a budgie. Yes that's right, a budgie. One of the films high-points (of which there are many) is Allan being attacked by the budgie belonging to his mean nurse. Of course, he's utterly defenceless, and it pecks away at his face. The nurse comes to his aid, but he nearly falls out of his bed, and rips his pajamas.

After a fire in which his doctor and ex-girlfriend are killed, Allan suspects the monkey is involved and gets Geoff to take it away.

The monkey escapes, returns to Allan, kills his Mum, attacks Geoff who's after the monkey. The finale is simply stunning, as Melanie shows up too. The monkey knocks her out and tries to set fire to her hair, and attacks her with a needle. Allan manages to move his hand to put music on! He outsmarts the monkey, and gets it to cuddle him. Then - and this bit is outstanding. He bites it. He holds it in his teeth and shakes it about. It's amazing! After this there's a dream sequence in which the monkey erupts from the mans back. Then he has surgery and can walk again.

Utterly, utterly fantastic. A psychotic helper monkey.

Yes it doesn't all make sense (why can Allan sometimes 'see' through the eyes of the monkey? - surely the 'telepathy' the monkey has is a one-way thing?) What happened with Geoff's scientist boss that liked to threaten rats with drowning as it made their brains work harder? Did Geoff die? Melanie checked his pulse, but said nothing.

Excellent moments included Allan getting stuck because the phone was caught in the back of his wheelchair, and when he tried to wake Melanie by constantly ramming into her.

The sex scene between Melanie and Allan in the barn with all of the monkeys was a little disturbing though.
