In my house we have a router. Two PC's are connected to it and there is a lead going from the router to my room which i have plugged into my laptop.
One of my housemates plugged his laptop into the same cable running from the router to my room and he had the internet which worked fine. So now my laptop is plugged into the router and the internet isn't working.
I have asked many people who have said various things about installing software, network card, ethernet card (are these two the same thing?). We have broadband but a dial up thing comes up for my username and password.
I'm on my housemates PC and got the phone number to dial up to from here as well as a few other things i thought i'd need.
My friend said i may need an ethernet card but then said that its in the router so i won't need one.
I have windows 98 also if thats any help.
Can anyone help me to get my internet sorted, pretty please!
PS-Uni is good, people are good, and my TV is crud, no reception.

Made me giggle that did. I can't beleive someone actually needed to know that? What next? "how do I get my iMac out of the box"?
In all serious though, I'd go with a mac at Uni, especially after the tasty student discount

Yeah, I think it's for the best. I recommend an Apple iMac. It does lot of PC-like things, but it's not a PC!!! Also, if you're having any problems carrying the iMac, please refer to the very helpful support:

If it's plugged into your laptop you've got the connection, just you need to set it up.
Someone here will post the details for connecting here, hopefully.
so what does that mean?

Is it broadband or a dial up connection?
You'd need a network card in your laptop for it to access the net, some have them built in but some don't.
If you go to Control panel > system > hardware tab > device manager and check to see if there is anything there like 'network adapters'.
The fact you have it plugged in means the cable must fit somewhere and if it worked for your mates laptop then it should be able to work for yours too.
If that dosn't work, try going into network connections in the control panel and trying to set up a new connection using the wizard.
