Just opened mine up to find a lot of dust everywhere, especially the 2 fans at the front of my case but also lots on my graphics card fan. Thought I might do a thread, done before I'm sure;

How often do you/should you clean out your PC?
How should you go about cleaning it and what to use?
What problems would occur from not getting rid of the dust in your computer?
How can you cut down on the amount of dust building up in your computer?

My old PC I can't remember if I ever cleaned it out (properly atleast) but this 'I built this' PC I would like to keep in good shape. Lots of other people I know who probably just bought their computer off the shelf probably dont clean theirs at all or even know how to get inside it. Now that I think about it I don't really read or see much about people cleaning their computer from dust, maybe you don't have to? I'm confused :S

I think there are 8 fans inside my computer, that's a lot of cooling needed.

My case came with dust guards for the fans, but I think I might remove them at uni. At the moment, my PC is on a carpetted floor, but I don't think it will be carpetted at uni (or if so, it'll probably be those carpet tiles which don't hold as much dust). I just think the dust guards drastically reduce the airflow.

Thats actually a rather good idea, although I'm waiting to see if we sell fans with some sort of filter (because you aint gonna finding me buying tights at the local supermarket). I hate getting dust over me if for instants I'm installing something new on my PC.

It rarely causes problems having dust in the case, other than slightly higher temperatures after a while. Despite that, I clean my PC a couple of times a year. To do that, compressed air and ear buds are the way to go, although if things are really bad on the heat sink I may take it off and wash it. Really, the only problem dust would cause is that if enough built up on the heat sink it would reduce its radiativity and if there was enough dust on the fan it could clog up and be slowed down.

But that really requires a lot of dust. More than I have with 6 fans in the case.

Another name change?

A regular checkup is good, improves cooling and all that.
