Pantano takes pole position as Salo takes a slight advantage
Giorgio Pantano has taken his first ever pole position at the USA Grand Prix. He edged out Barrichello, in good form, and Button in a tricky session as drizzle made it slightly slippery on the track.
It is advantage Salo in the race for the title as he starts 4 places ahead of Baumgartner in 10th, with Baumgartner in 14th. It's bad news for Villeneuve as he starts down in 20th. Heidfeld's good form has crashed to earth with a bang starting 19th. Ralf Schumacher starts down in 15th, Barrichello 2nd, Button 3rd, Fisichella in 9th and Montoya, the last of the potential Championship winners, in 6th.
Pantano could help put B.A.R closer in the Constructors Championship after taking pole position. Barrichello still has title aspirations in 2nd. Button is firing on two fronts in 3rd. Not a bad position in the race at all. Now if only he can get around the track and over the finishing line before springing a leak we could be in for some points here.

3rd? Good chance of decent points here, although seeing Button's recent form it may not be quite as likely. I'm hoping for a win, though, if he does get his act together properly right here and right now...
