Silverstone

‘Twas upon a hard chrome day at the end of September,
One we'll all despise, and one we’ll remember.
‘Twas the day that Bernie Ecclestone, to our despair,
Pulled the plug on Silverstone, as it disappeared into air.

The chief himself, brash and broad,
Pulled down the curtain upon the circuit we adored.
An array of many were tearful and cried,
As the British circuit lay down and died.

Stewart the president, his eye filled with tears,
Tried to save the circuit of 54 years.
But demands of 9 million could not be met,
And the F1 fanatics gasped and wept.

Ecclestone, top-man, the deadlines set,
For our poor circuit, swallowed in debt.
Profits were low, improvements were stark,
And all they did was a larger car park.

150 million needed to be raised,
By selling half the land, upon which cows would then graze.
But Ecclestone was harsh with the circuit deal,
He wanted commercial improvements, not a club meal.

Risks were not taken, Silverstone called lame,
Whilst other country circuits put us to shame.
And Williams, all shocked, and feeling all funny,
Said it was the Government’s fault for the lack of hard money.

And whilst we wept, the Chinese roared,
Their new circuit, sparkling and broad.
State-of-the-art, gleaming and bold,
Whilst our Silverstone sat creaky and old.

But the Government struck back, they weren’t impressed,
Whilst Stewart and co struggled and stressed.
‘We did contribute’ the Government said,
24 million in all, to a circuit now dead.

But whilst the era is over, and the circuit to rot,
There are some memories that will never be forgot.
Like in 1950, the first Grand Prix,
A stunning win by Italian Guiseppe.

And in ’92, the British so proud,
Our own Nigel Mansell, wooing the home crowd.
And in ’95, the Michael and Hill pound,
With Herbet taking victory, on his home ground.

And who forgot ’98, that Michael so sly,
With a time penalty still won, and made us all cry.
But now the era is over, the circuit fell,
And all we can do is bid it farewell.

Nice poem.

Well I think it was coming, anyone know how damn expensive it is to have a day at the Silverstone F1 GP? Too expensive! Especially considering the sport has turned into a one man contest.

That, coupled with Murray Walker's retirement (who is that guy who commentates now? He sounds awful when the race starts..."Goooooo!" in a not too masculine voice *shudder*, has me gritting my teeth).

Once the start is over and Michael Schumacher is in front by the first corner, it's usually worth going to do someone else and seeing how many seconds he won by in the evening news =P

I won't miss it personally, I think the government is partly to blame for banning cigarette advertising...silly really given how much they make per packet in tax =P

Yes, totally agree.

I went to Silverstone this year, and to be honest I wasn't too impressed. The whole place seems so run down and dated.

The Barhim and Chinese Grand Prixs will serve the 'sport' better, but I was sad to see the historic Silverstone leave the F1 scene so bitterly.

As for Schumacher, roll on 2008 when the cars will be the same and where you finish is down to your skill alone.
