Who plays computer games the most? Students, the unemployed and bachelors. What do these people have in common? Time on their hands. It is a known fact that old people are taking over the world. There are more OAPs now than ever in the history of man and who has more time on their hands than the people I mentioned above? – that’s right – oldies. The old age market is vastly untapped with very few releases for the elderly since ‘Granny Shopper’ bleeped away on our Commodore 64’s. What an earth is the games industry up to?

The future of gaming is old people. They do nothing all day other than get on the bus, go to town, visit Kwik Save and buy dog food for a pet they don’t even have before returning home on the bus – chatting up the bus driver and complaining about the timetable. I believe if this was put into some kind of adventure game, perhaps even online, then it would be massive. Old people love only one thing more than their daily visit to town and that’s sitting down in front of the T.V. If some bright spark was to mix the two then the OAP’s would think they’ve died and gone to heaven. Games ideas could be ‘Theme Post office’ which allows them to queue up for as long as they want and the action packed adventure ‘Stop’ a game that allows them to pick up points for seemingly stopping for no reason while walking around a shop. Other games could include a racing game involving those electric buggy things and virtual bingo (tobacco stained walls included).

Although it may seem that this is just a joke I am also serious about the opportunities in making games for the older age groups. Games should be for everyone. I know it might go against the trendy young image of Hardware and software developers but there’s a market just waiting to be given what it’s waited 65 years for and lots of money to be made. After all – ‘Gran Turismo’ could take on a whole new meaning.
