Muh?

I do sometimes find it hard to understand people. I mean, how hard is it to learn a language that you are completely immersed in for 18 years of your life?

hey sheepy, i whacked some helpful stuff in your "joining a gym" thread.. hope it's of some use to you. you may have to scroll a bit, it got hijacked by Tanoy i'm afriad....

on this topic though, it's ridiculous that a university student needs lessons in basic grammar. shows that it really is all about getting the money really doesn't it? :(

A lot of people I know can speak fluent English. And they only just came here this September. Rather laughable, though crappy parts of the UK can produce these folk.

"Some students could not write, spell or punctuate simple sentences."

And they are being allowed into university why?

No, it shows that the education system is willing to give hope to the few people that may have learning difficulties, but are interested in acquiring a skill. I used to work with someone who was a senior electrician at a plant, where he was responsible for lots of important stuff - and he couldn't read very well, let alone spell properly! But he had a trade that he had built on over years, and easily had far more knowledge than someone who could spend 3 or 4 years at a University training to do the same job.

The government is actually helping people get on the right track to the future they want, albeit expensively, but it's a start. Just because you've got a degree doesn't mean you're cleverer than the next person: it just means that you're specialised in a certain area, and have proven yourself academically.
