Few modern day actresses are considered capable of carrying a movie to box office success. Julia Roberts probably being the only one to command Premiership status although Angelina Jolie may well be promoted into this bracket before the year is out. Many more are blatantly under-rated and are worthy of better opportunities. Cameron Diaz, Helen Hunt, Salma Hayek and Ashley Judd to name but four.
Ashley Judd did in fact star in last years Double Jeopardy in one of the most female dominated roles for years only to find herself behind bit part Tommy Lee Jones when the credits rolled. No doubt Mr Jones walked away with double her pay cheque too but it certainly wasn't his name that made me want to watch the movie.
The main problem faced by todays actresses though has nothing to do with acting ability but in the script writers reluctance to build a story around a female lead. Todays films are weighted firmly in favour of men. Take a look at the top DVD titles floating around at the moment. Gladiator, Fight Club, The Terminator, Billy Elliot and Hollow Man, all male dominated. It's not that men can act any better than women, it's more a case of film makers being afraid to put their faith in the attraction of a film heroine. Many prefer to cast such wooden performers as Keanu Reeves, Kevin Costner or Toy Story's Woody rather than take a chance on the fairer sex.
Come on Film Industry, let's see more ladies lighting up our screens. We've over gorged ourselves on macho no-brainers for long enough now. After all, fifty percent of all cinema goers must be male and I know who I would rather spend two hours looking at.
