"is a database needed?"

I am wanting to have a table with links down one side and the amount of times them links have been clicked on the other side and have the table sorted with the most viewed at the top and going down like that.

I was just wondering if i needed a database to do this??

and if not could someone please show me a small piece of code for it

Simple answer no, you should be able to code something to write to a text based file that reads the number and adds +1 every time its clicked.
I recommend looking at [URL]http://www.hotscripts.com[/URL] as they have some good examples
