Nick Heidfeld has won the Italian Grand Prix, his second victory of the season and perhaps an outside chance of the World Championship. He edged out the Jordan of Ralf Firman and the Williams of Ralf Schumacher to win.
It was another race which had a lot of retirements. Salo was the first to go on lap 2 when he crashed out. Villeneuve and Panis were scrapping when Panis spun, forcing Villeneuve into a wall to retire on lap 3. Sato damaged his front wing on Villeneuve's car.
An engine problem caused Panis to crash out on lap 4. Barrichello, the driver on pole position crashed out on lap 5. Coulthard developed transmission problems and retired on lap 8. The race calmed down again until lap 32 when Championship leader, Baumgartner, retired with an engine fire.
Montoya's engine blew on lap 41, closely followed by Michael Schumacher crashing out on lap 42. Pizzonia's engine blew on lap 46 and Bruni was the last car to retire when he crashed out on lap 47.
There wasn't much incident, apart from the retirements. The first lap had Bruni and Barrichello fighting for the lead until Barrichello tapped Brhni into a spin. Button spun early on and Barrichello also spun early on as they dropped to the back of the closely bunched field. Button and Barrichello were battling with Baumgartner the next lap and they both forced Baumgartner off the track.
Verstappen and Pantano had a coming together early on and Frentzen and De La Rosa also had a battle which resulted in both running off the track. Near the end of the race, Verstappen pushed too hard and lost a nose cone on a wall.
Heidfeld's win puts him 22 points behind Baumgartner with 3 races remaining. Firman may be out of the title race but the points keep coming with 2nd place. Ralf Schumacher picks up 6 points for 3rd and he is on the same amount of points as Heidfeld. Fisichella makes it a good haul of points for Jordan with 4th place. Raikkonen scores points but drops out of the title race with 5th. Da Matta edges Toyota closer to escaping last place in the Constructors with 6th. Button comes through the carnage to take 7th and De La Rosa takes the last point in 8th.

PREDICTION WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
The gap was 26pts meaning that Der Nazi is almost assured of the title. Will the title challenge go on to the next round? Let's find out... (Bonus point available for closest to the tie breaker)
1st Badgerman 10pts + 1pt (25pts - +7.409s)
2nd Ineedsleep 8pts (20pts - +8.112s)
3rd Jae 6pts (13pts - +7.496s)
4th Foreman 5pts (7pts - +7.824s)
5th Der Nazi 4pts (6pts - +8.061s)
6th Chris 3pts (5pts - +8.747s)
7th Mike Swade 2pts (4pts)
Congratulations to Badgerman, who correctly guessed that Jordan would score the most points and that Salo would retire first. Also, well done to Ineedsleep for correctly guessing that Barrichello would get pole position.
The table now looks like this:
1st Der Nazi - 98pts (4 wins)
2nd Ineedsleep – 76pts (1 win)
3rd Mike Swade – 67pts (2 wins)
4th Jae – 65pts (2 wins)
5th Chris – 59pts (2 wins)
6th Foreman – 58pts (2 wins)
7th Biggie Little – 49pts (1 win)
8th Badgerman – 46pts (1 win)
9th Absolut Neo – 14pts
10th Azul – 11pts
11th RoJ – 8pts
12th Virtuoso – 7pts
13th Icarus – 6pts
14th Wakka – 4pts
15th Notorious Biggles – 1pt
The gap is now 22pts with only 30 available. (I apologise if I made it seem that 4th place was enough to win the title, Der Nazi. I forgot it was an 18 round season.)
Anyway, only 1 of 2 can now win the Prediction World Championship. Der Nazi just needs to outscore Ineedsleep or get 2nd place (depending on bonus points).
As for the Drivers title, only 9 drivers can now mathematically win the title. They are:
Baumgartner
Salo
Villeneuve
Heidfeld
R Schumacher
Barrichello
Button
Fisichella
Montoya
It could be as little as 2 by the end of the next round, with 30 points to play for.
The Constructors Championship is still close with 1st and 11th split by 37 points and 54 maximum to play for.
The next round is in the USA. The Prediction Thread will be up later today and you have until the Friday 1st October (as I'm away for the majority of the weekend and won't have the time) with the qualifying up on that day and the race on the Wednesday 6th October. Hope to see you all there!
Yey!
> but drops out of the title race with 5th
Doh!
Fisi shall win.
We all know it.
And I shall win prediction league (Mathematically impossible is wrong)
