He said that football games are just glorified Pac-Man.
I know I wasn't around back then, but Pac-Man was one of the greatest games of all time. Well, thats what my dad says anyway.
But what does Pac Man have in common with FIFA 2001?
What does Q-Bert (yes, my dad told me about that as well) have in common with WWF No Mercy?
What do Wierd games (those that cannot be put into a genre) have to do with Sports games?
I'll tell you what, I say, I'll tell you what. Those weird games are what sports games evolved from.
"What!" I hear you cry from the rooftops. "Football is related to a yellow blob eating other blobs and eating bigger blobs so he can eat the ghosts who are guarding the blobs?"
Think about it: they are both linear games which take place inside a confined space, with a fixed set of rules. You cannot get out of that space - you're stuck there. In Perfect Dark you can shoot a rocket at a wall if you want - its not very effective, but you can do it. In Pac Man you can't do anything like that, anything away from the objective. In FIFA you can't do anything much away from the objective. Yeah, you can see how many times you can hit a certain pixel in the crowd, but still, you are confined to trying to hit a ball into a net. Very linear.
So, what do you think? Am I completely wrong (very likely, seeing as the idea for this post came from my dad), or is there some truth in what my dad says?
