Hi everyone,

My friend recently received a new Computer (which will be used in his room), located away from the current family computer. I therefore suggested he should buy a Wireless Router (for the family comp to connect to), and a Wireless PCI card for his comp.

Well, it would be fine, except for the fact that he ordered a Wireless Router, without a modem included. Add to the fact that the current BB modem uses a USB interface to connect to the PC upstairs, we have a problem.

Now, I've searched on the Internet for a Broadband Modem that will connect via Ethernet to the current Router. Unfortunately, it's a little costly, around £40 (Edit. It's a D-Link DSL-300T).

Is there ANY Broadband modem that not only connects to the Phoneline (obviously), but also has an ethernet port on the back to allow it to connect to a Router, and is also (fairly) cheap?

Cheers,

Chipseh

I just texted him (at 1:30 in the morning, I know!) to say that he should return the thing back to ebuyer, get a refund, and then order a new one with Modem included.

I hope he's not too angry! :D

I'm on NTL and my set up is:

Cable Modem > Linksys 4port/802.11b switch/router > Ethernet to PC / Wireless to laptop.

If on ADSL, D-Link make a combined ADSL modem/Router/4 Port switch/Wiless hub (Think its the 614+) All you'd need then is the 614 and a PCMICA card for the laptop.

Otherwise (and I can't beleive I'm saying this) But PCWorld are flogging a 54G combined ADSL Modem/Router/Wireless Hub and 54G PCMICA card for £99!

Ie.

Modem > Router > Ethernet cable to PC 1 and wireless to PC 2.

I don't see why not.

How long has it been since the router was purchased? I assume he bought it online in which case he can return the router within 8 days of delivery under the long distance selling law. Then he can buy one with an integrated modem.

Yes, but that means the other PC he has needs to be on for him to access the Internet, defeating the point of a Router in the first place.

Cant you go:
USB Modem (Modem plugged into USB and Phoneline) > Ethernet (RJ45 Straight Cable straight from Ethernet port on computer straight into Router) > Wireless Router > Wireless PCI Card on his computer.

Its an alternative way of doing things if you can understand what i am saying. Look on ebay for a modem, you can get them dirt cheap.
