Eriksson: Beckham played through pain
Friday September 10 2004
"Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed that David Beckham played through the pain barrier for England in Poland as he once again came to the support of his under-fire captain.
"Apart from last month's friendly against Ukraine, Beckham has failed to reach his normally high international standards over recent months. Indeed, former England captain Terry Butcher was prompted to criticise Beckham's influence ahead of the midweek World Cup qualifying victory in Katowice."
"I think he was in pain (from a rib injury) for more or less for 90 minutes. I took him off because of that but I think he played well," insisted Eriksson. "I'm not concerned. He's played just one league game for Real Madrid and he's at the beginning of the season."
"He added: "You want to drop him? I don't know if you trust me or not, but if I thought we had a better player on the right than David Beckham, I would change. But I don't think we have one."
----------
We've heard it all before from Eriksson - and, even, Beckham himself, following Euro 2004 - and I still have only one-word with which to describe how I feel about all this (...one I cannot post on these forums).
My question is: If a player is suffering with any kind of injury, why even consider putting them on the subs' bench with consideration for what this could do to the team's performance, aswel as the player's own health?
Oh, I forgot, sorry... This is DAVID BECKHAM we're talking about!! :P
As for the Swede's last comment ('there is no-one better!'), honestly, he needs to visit an optitions - and fast!
Did he not see Shaun Wright-Phillips a few weeks ago?? If he indeed watches as much Premiership football as he's made out to, surely, there's no way he could've missed the way the lad's improved vastly...
We ALL saw how 'comfortabley' Beckham seemed to adjust to a central role against the Ukraine, also. Obviously, Eriksson didn't.
Someone - not the FA or Tord Grip! - needs to tell him to pay attention to his job and that the job he should be doing doesn't involve numbers in your bank account going through the roof!! :I
:P
Sorry Sven me old swede mucker no matter how you want to play it the fact remains Becks has done nothing to warrant his place in the team recently on form alone and is basically picked because of who he is.
