I agree. The stat side is there in moderation - about as much as in the first Secret of Mana game, only in quite a different way and with turn based combat instead of real time. The battle system is far superior than that of the Final Fantasy games and the like as there are enough changing factors to keep it interesting without going over the top to the point where you're battling with number that keep going up and down until one side runs out.
I'd call it the best RPG since Secret of Mana 2, which I rate higher than the first. Skies of Arcadia certainly shows Phantasy Star Online up to be the mess of an RPG that it is, when it actually is little more than a repetitive action game you can play alongside complete strangers you'll never meet or speak to.
Game
I was first introduced to the game via the demo, then borrowed it and played it for 4 hours (not all the way through though, I kept dying at first) It's got a nice storyline and good characters too.
As usual, I posted a review on SR, in the correct place of course.
