I've just been using my laptop and it crashed, and would not restart. I tried about 15-18 times no luck.

I then got out the System Restore Disk (Win XP Home SP1) placed it in the drive and set the Laptop to Boot from CD Drive.

The CD loads up I click yes restore to Factory Settings, the process begins and gets stuck at 88Mb / 12 % it then reports and write error and the CD is ejected.

I'm now trying a windows 98 Quick Restore the process seems to be stuck at 3%.

Is my harddrive damaged (in which case do I need a new one), or could it be something else?

What make is the hard drive, if you use a diag tool specifically from the manufacturer you should be able to confirm whether it has screwed.
I recommend you try http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

I took the laptop apart and put it back together, I then managed to install XP again and 12 hours later:

Please Backup All Data Your Hard Drive Is About To Fail.

>30 Second Later

Windows Is Restarting

>Another 30 Seconds

Windows Is Restarting

Windows Is Restarting.... etc

I was fixing a friends laptop, and i tried to install a ghost image, windows, loads of things, it just wouldnt go on.
I got another harddrive and it worked fine, i assumed the harddrive was corrupt, maybe some virus, i dont know. But it sounds like your problem.

Thanks but I don't think it's anything to do with the fan because I can feel it pumping out air and the air isn't even that hot it's been alot hotter in the past.

The words "Needle" and "Haystack" sring to mind.

Seriously though, it sounds to me like something serious has "gone twitchy" (technical term, copyright me).

Could be memory, hard disk, even hard disk controllers.

First idea? Check the CPU fan is working. Laptops are notorious for overheating, and if it's turned off the CPU will cool. Start installing, CPU heats to over it's acceptable tolerance, crash. Happened to a rep in my old company. I relpaced the fan and everything was hunkydory.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks!
Thank you for dealing with this so promptly it's nice having a service provider that offers a good service, rare to find nowadays.
Wonderful...
... and so easy-to-use even for a technophobe like me. I had my website up in a couple of hours. Thank you.
