I am sure that i am increibly wrong, but last year "the Premiership" on ITV was sponsored by CocaCola. Now this season, CocaCola take over the lower leagues. And then rename them Championship Div1 etc. Now ITV show highlights of the Championship (old Div1). Is it not convienient that when ITV lost their premierhsip rights, CC take Div 1, give it a better name.

Imagine if the ITV show was called "Division 1" not The Championship

The thing is Division one football is more exciting and unpredictable...

As opposed to the Arsenal, Chelsea and Man United Premiership.

With that in mind it does indeed deserve more recognition and TV rights.

is suspect it was actually because people say nationwide division one with out thinking about it.

by screwing with the names they remove nationwides identity and it allows them to put their own identity on its nicely alliterated championship

To me, it makes no sense at all- having the Premiership is a good exception to the rule, because it showcases the best clubs in Enlgnad. Otherwise, all these changes really make no sense- Numbers mean more, and you can't just have two numbered divisions- to me, it makes no sense. It's sponsorship and acquisition of TV revenue gone underpants-on-head stark raving mad.

I think that on some level you are right, but not completely. I wouldnt imagine ITV were anything to do with the renaming, i cant see Coca Cola being bothered about thier show at all.

Main reason behind it i would imagine would be just to add more glamour to Division 1, by calling it The Championship. It makes sense in a way.

Though calling the third tier of football (that being division 2) League One, is a bit daft.
