Okay, so anyone buy any new animes lately? My brother today just bought Azumanga Daioh Vol. 1 now this is a title that I've mentioned a lot before but many of you hadnt seen it, well finally it's being released in the UK and the first volume is already out, the second is out in just over 2 weeks. Has anyone got it yet? It's very different from out usual animes, it's a comedy based around a groupd of girls at school. It's very funny and most enjoyable not sure what all your tastes are, perhaps you prefer more dark animes like Helsing or BGC2040 etc. But if you like comedy I do suggest it. Check out the ADV website for a trailer, though I have gotten use to hearing it in Japanese it might be interesting to hear the English dub. So many memorable scenes, I can see it being a hit with most people :D
Rosalind did you get round to seeing the commentary for Najica? Speaking of Monica Rial who did the voice of Lela in Najica, she was the first guest (for quite awhile) at a UK convention that happened, was it last week? Anyone go to that? I think it was our largest one, reached a 1000 I think, can't remember. Hopefully they all enjoyed it, I remember seeing pictures of a giant Totoro plushie, a favourite for everyone. A missed oppurtunity for some of you to get her to sign your Najica panties ;D
Grave of the Fireflies came out the other week, has anyone got it yet? I havent been able to but it's a two disc special so I'm curious as to what is on it. As most of you know that most of the Disney Ghibli DVD releases are pretty pathetic when it comes to additional features. You're usually stuck with a storyboard and dubtitles. Though this Ghibli was never bought by Disney.
Some new releases I've just noticed, Go Nagai’s New Cutey Honey (not sure what that is), Rune Soldiers, Hellsing Limited Edition (so bad news for those Hellsing fans who might have to buy them again :D) and later in the year, boxsets of Escaflowne and the first volume of Cowboy Bebop. Anyone seen Escaflowne? It was on Fox Kids awhile ago but I doubt many caught that. Good to see Cowboy Bebop finally getting a release, quite some time after the movie release. Oh and one other anime series, Love Hina comes out next week I think. Will anyone be getting it, or do most of you who already know the series already own the R1 version? tut tut :P poor MVM as usual.
Some other animes we got were Full Metal Panic, Play.com seem to be selling them for £8.99 which is a very good price, havent got round to watching it yet. All in all, I havent seen many new series lately, and a lot of the new UK releases I've already seen. Except Kiddy Grade or Fruit Baskets.
One other thing, Korean films, I dont suppose any of you are interested, except Totoro, you watch them right? I saw the other week a film on BBC2 Take Care of My Cat I really quite enjoyed it and wanted to see more Korean films, one that I saw was something called My Sassy Girl that was hailed as a great movie from Korea since the industry boomed in the late 90ies. Do you have any other recommendations or are you mainly into the action movies, which I dont mind either of course :D. Havent ordered anything off Yesasia yet but they seem to be priced cheap on there, just need to find a few more titles to make up the free delivery.
So, yeah buy any animes lately? What did you think? Any new ones you're interested in? Buy any anime magazines, I heard Newtype are not going to sell theirs with a DVD, wonder if that'll affect their sales
I dont have Sky anymore, but from what I've seen there are still no new anime series on. Which is a big shame as there are so many titles for Toonami to pick up but still havent. Hopefully in the next few months their will be some good news as all these repeats are getting tiresome.
I might get one of those.
> Could you PLEASE tell me what the following titles are like?
>
> Spirited Away: The best film I saw at the cineam last year...by a country mile. A superb film that everybody should own.
> Neon Genesis Evangelion: Meant to be the best series about, though I've only seen the first few episodes so far. I Started buying the new US Platinum releases so will know more about it when they're all released.
> Sonic the Hedgehog the movie: Dunno, probably a bit crap as all Sonic stuff tends to be.
> Dragon Half: Dunno
> Burn-up Excess: Good fun. Mad-cap cop show with lots of action and jiggling fan-service.
As for stuff I've seen/bought recently...
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex vol.1 is bloody good (and is also being released in the UK soon). Gravion is quite good, in a highly cliched giant robot show kinda way, and Read or Die the TV series is also fairly good.
I've also recently ordered the first dvd of Get Backers.
As for Korean films, it is an area of film that's getting a bit more attention now. I'm definitely no expert on the subject, but I have now seen 3 or 4 fairly decent Korean films and I'm sure there are plenty more decent ones to see. I've seen Oldboy (which is getting rave reviews everywhere), Natural City is a style-over-substance Blade Runner rip-off, it's ambitious, but a bit flawed.
Wonderful Days is an interesting Korean anime "multimation" film (blending cel-animation, CGI and minitures), again though, while it looks nice eye-candy, it is a bit flawed, let down by the dodgy story and wooden characters. Both that and Natural City are probably worth a look though, even if it's just for the ambition they show.
I've heard that Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is meant to be good, as is Shiri and Memories of Murder. 301 302 also sounds interesting.
> Spirited Away,
Spirited Away is a movie done by Hayao Miyazaki and his Studio Ghibli. They are a very popular studio and have been making films since the early 80ies. Several of their movies are released (cheaply) on DVD. Spirited Away is about a girl who is trapped in a spirit world, where she's forced to work or turned into a pig like her parents. I'm sure someone could go through it in more detail.
> Neon Genesis Evangelion,
This is a very popular series and I think is currently being made into a live action movie. No doubt will fail. It's about 3 kids and mechas used to destroy giant monsters that come down. Very interesting, a fan favourite.
> Sonic the Hedgehog the movie,
Havent seen it, though seen plenty of trailers, Belldandy might know.
> Dragon Half, and
A wonderful one of anime, though I think incomplete. About a half dragon half girl who falls for Dick Saucer(?) a singer. She enters a tournment in order to see him. It is an incomplete story but many enjoy it. Think there's a manga. Comedy.
> Burn-up Excess?
The sequel series of Burn Up-W big breasted women, lots of fanservice, they have missions, lots of funny bits, quite enjoyable. Yeah I think they're a team of a special force called Warrior but you're more interested in the fanservice than the actual story.
Spirited Away,
Neon Genesis Evangelion,
Sonic the Hedgehog the movie,
Dragon Half, and
Burn-up Excess?
Thanx a bunch!
:D
