My somewhat modest specs:

AMD Athlon 1.4GHz processor
768MB RAM
An amazingly large 20GB HDD (which I'm upgrading anyway, so you don't need to worry about this)
Radeon 9600 (which is fine for now)
Um.

Yeah.

I'm pretty much looking at a new processor, but don't know if I'd need a new mobo or whatever.
It's a GA-7VTX (Gigabyte).

I'd rather stick with AMD to be honest, but if I must change, then fine.

I'm not looking to dish out a Securicor truck load of money, but obviously I want one of good speed that will last me etc.

So.
Suggestions?
Cheers.

He's just bought the RAM, so don't think he would want to get rid of it that soon.

The fastest processor you could just plug in would be the 266 FSB version of the 2600XP. Finding them however is a bit difficult. The 333 FSB version of the 2600XP will work, just slower than it should.

Quick lesson time: CPU speed equals FSB x multiplier. The 333 FSB version has a higher FSB and a lower multiplier, giving the same speed overall. If you use it at a lower FSB and with its already lower multiplier, you get a lower speed.

The most easily found plug in and play processor would be the 2400XP. Can be found for around £47.

If you want better than that then you will need a new motherboard. And if you get a new motherboard and processor your RAM will be on the slow side, although it will work. To be honest, get the 2400XP, or go the whole hog and get an Athlon 64 processor and motherboard.

You might be able to keep the RAM, but I doubt it, and you'd probably want to invest in some new stuff anyways, as it'd be horribly slow for the system.

yeah, sorry mate but a CPU change generally includes a new mobo as well :(

novatech.co.uk have some good bundles at fairly good prices (after you've tried SR of course ;) )

Hmmm, if you want a faster processor a motherboard upgrade is pretty much mandatory i would say, which would also mean upgrading your RAM.

Pricey.
