Just got it - seems good so far.
Yeah, that got me too, I only found out towards the end that you had to use Commanders to order about the Darwinians'. Saying that though, while a little confusing in some places, I found the game very easy to pick up and get the hang of, and I love the sytem it uses for constructing new units.
It's very, very good, but a little confusing.
Squad -> kill trails, engineer takes over incubator, get some darwinians, send 'em to the refinery, take over portal with engineer, kills spiders with new squad. Erm. What now? The mine is miles away. An I missing something blindingly obvious?

Use the radar towers.

Demo’s only 10 MB big.
I loved the whole retro feel of it, especially the heavily pixillated soldier units and their 16-bit sounding hand grenades. Check the box art of the game as well, one of the most stylish covers I've ever seen for a game.
