I know some of you did A-Level Computing, and I'm having trouble deciding on my database project for this years coursework. Now i dont know if you guys had the same project or not. But we've been set the task of creating a 'complex' database for some sort of organisation. Some examples given to us were, Estate Agents, Insurance Companies, and a Travel Agents, but aside from that the only other idea I have is for some sort of Medical Establishment. So I was wondering if anybody could give me any ideas, or tips in general. Thanks in advance...

i had to do something similar for a gcse project,
it was a list of games movies football results, and stupid pictures.
it worked until i forgot the password and it got closed once 30days had passed...

still got a mark for it, wasn't all that good, maybe not the best thing to do.

why dont you do a porn rental database. if its ficticious, You could list all the names from gameaday and list their favorite catagories and the amount of times they withdraw films.

Look at a wider range of places. Two of my friends didnt do a company at all. One did a music database for his friend who was a DJ at his local village hall. Another did his Rowing clubs training schedule or something. Others had done other local clubs/groups that they were involved in.

So something like that would be good as you can then get feedback from the person in charge of the club/group and hopefully get better marks because of it.

Yeah we've been told that, but there's not that many company's I actually know, nor would be able to go and ask about a computing system.

When I did my A-Level database project 3-4 years ago we had to do it for a company or place we actually knew to get feedback etc.

If you can do it on anything then why not pick something you like? Video rental shop, game rental shop, car dealership etc.

I had a few ideas such as barcode readers and other small gadgetry to speed up recognition of items in a store, but there's nothing much else you can do within that timeframe and added cost. And believe me, it really isn't worth all that hassle.

When you've finished with your proj, you may think, "Seems too simple to be worth anything", or "I could have done a lot more with that", but its far better saving it for the future.

OK, all good. Though it's best not to get bogged down with a feature rich system if it's not done in time. A Level projects, to get the max marks, don't really to be truly innovative and amazing. Just follow the specs to the letter, do a bit more if you have time to impress, and you'll get 100%.

I actually said I thought of a decent Idea, being the Medical Establishment, but I was wondering what type of thing other people have done, and I'd rather do something a bit more complex. Looking at some of the ideas fellow classmates have had, I should be ok. One was a Napstar type site, despite us only having Access available, so I dont know how he's gonna do that. Another was a program dealing with Hotel Room Service charges!

Where did I say otherwise. I just said, we were shown examples of the sort of thing we were aiming for. but I'm having trouble on deciding on a company of my own. I dont want to copy the samples that were given to us...
