usually you will find that most hit boxoffice sellers and award winers will be american films. The british manage to release on fairly good film once every 2 years. Billy elliot was a good film but not brilliant. bithish film,s tend to be too low budget and loook to cheap and are usually set in a british location anyway. there seems to be a massive contrast between english and american films but what is it that makes them different?

Well english films tend to be set in older times (probably to hide the low budget set) and look...... tacky. Some films like the ful monty and billy elliot are ok but they are both set in england and not much looks like it has benn put into the film. Well would we make a film like castaway.... i doubt it, the next big british seller will probably be a tale of some geezer who is an artist in scotland etc.

american films have a higher budget, higher quality and are overall just better to watch.
they bascially make evry film that comes out anyway. they make expensive hyped films and most are damn good.
There are so many i have given up on the british films and just watch overseas ones. films like castaway and d &d are pretty good and our films dont really stand a chance!

so american film are more to a higher standard.
my fav british film is the life of brian which is british comedy at its best in my opinion! (:)

I thought it was pretty much universally agreed, that the best comedy is derived from pain and hardship...

I wasn't a fan of The Full Monty, it was depressing in the moments that weren't supposed to be funny. Poor unemployed Sheffield bloke, and the problems with his son.

Same with East is East, some funny moments between scenes of wife beating, and depression.

But you're right, there have been some fine British movies, like Trainspotting, Lock Stock, and the previously mentioned Shallow Grave.

The problem is for every Shallow Grave, there's half a dozen Up and Under's or Maybe Maybe's.

Oh well. Bring back the Hammer House of Horror, that's what I say!

I believe that Shallow Grave was a British film which happens to be one of the best Horror/Thrillers around - It may be getting on a bit but it still has that typical British class to it and still a great film to watch!!

Don't forget FOur Weddings, Notting Hill, Lock, Stock and Snatch in that list, plus the current hit Bridget Jones Diary.

The British made films are creeping back due to lottery grants and talented British directors. It depends how you class a British film. A lot of US films are made in Pinewood, making them British made films. There are British directors making films in both Britain and the US, Gladiator, for instance, was made by Ridley Scott.

Of course, British funded films made here by British directors are the most rare of these, but they are becoming less so every year. Let's hope they continue to rise and fly the flag for British cinema. We need to reclaim our great film heritage.
