Alan Smith. What a signing the lad is proving to be, after all that's been said about him in the past.

Loathed by the Leeds, loved by the Old Trafford faithful for his exceptional work-rate and true passion for claiming victory.

He's only hit 2 goals this season, but what goals they have been!
An awful lot's been asked of him as the only 'out-and-out striker' left now that Forlan's gone and the rest lie on the treatment table, but he really has risen to the challenge of it all, so far.

Already he's given far more to our team that just those 2 goals, but, right now, it's too hard to talk about anything else.

We've had some superb strikers in our time under Sir Alex Ferguson, but how many capable of striking the back of the net like Smith did against Norwich, Saturday evening?
Mark Hughes, Andy Cole, Brian McClair, Teddy Sheringham, to name a few...
Yet, each time I see Alan Smith play now, I'm reminded of only one player from the past - and that is, Eric "The King" Cantona.

Just hear me out for a few minutes, please...
Both Paul Scholes and Roy Keane can surely hit the ball, but who other would've had the audacity to try a strike like that from such an acute angle - let alone getting it in - on the weaker foot, aswell?
With all the foreign players arriving each year [though, I have very little against the likes of van Nistelrooy and Ronaldo] and an increasing lack young blood coming through, when was the last time we saw someone lead an attack as passionately and driven as Alan Smith does?
How many players - a striker, even - would be willing to fight for every-last-ball when the shape of play turns in the other direction [defense]?

As you may well know, I was a big fan of Alan Smith several years before now. Signing for Man United is the icing on the cake, in my opinion. Think of Smith as 'just another England striker' and you're wrong. He's versitile. He has fire. He isn't fazed by money or what other people might think. He knows he has a job to do, and he does it. One-of-a-kind, he's no Michael Owen! [sorry, Stryke! ;D ]

People talk about Peter Schmeichel, Steve Bruce and Jaap Stam, Roy Keane when his time comes, and still, even David Beckham... Yet, I can't remember the last time someone made note of the absense of Eric Cantona in our team. Whether you believe he needs 'replacing' or not, I believe the substitute has arrived.

"Across the Pennines, he whom brings only triumph shall arrive..."

I don't care about Wayne Rooney. He may have 'out-shone' for England in the summer, but, to me, he's still too young and far too inexperienced to wear the colours of our Legendary club. What has he done to earn the right to wear our shirt? We had enough of the 24-hour media attention when David Beckham was at the club - and we don't want it back, Mr.Gill, thankyouverymuch!

Perhaps I'm wrong, though. Perhaps Smithy's superb start will not last...
Things can easily change during the passage of time. Before we know it, Ruud van Nistelrooy will be back and raring-to-go anyway...
Whatever happens, it looks like even Louis Saha will have a job trying to force his way back in - let's see he has earnt the international call-ups for reasons other than that of his new employers!

If he is back, then we should expect Alan Smith to do a kung-fu-bottle-kick at the crowd.

JOKE!!!!

common sense if you ask me, Man U are poop now and are just like Liverpool 12 - 15 years ago, a dying championship side who's no longer able to compete against the elete. How pleased they must be winning the FA cup when only a few seasons ago they slapped the same cup in the face by pulling out for another cup which is a lot less respected.

Let's face it - Leeds are crap at the moment. It's the only thing Ive got to fall back on.

And so surely you'd rather watch "awesome", exciting football rather than not?

That doesn't make sense to me. Sure, he left Leeds, blah blah traitor etc etc, but who cares.
He's at another club, get over it.

I'd rather see Alan Smith not playing

I don't get this.
You'd rather not see an "awesome player" playing?
Mind you, following Leeds' matches, you wouldn't see much of that anyway - would you?

I'm not going to go mad at you, Sols - you've got every right to enjoy Smithy and the sheer brilliance that he is. He may be a dirty, lying traitor who doesn't deserve to play football, but he's still an awesome player.

It's just the fact that nobody seemed to care last season. Nobody gave a damn. Sven? Where were you then? Smithy worked his ass off every game, every week all season last year. He (and Mr. Pennant) carried a team. A whole fecking team. His spirited displays gave a team which would've otherwise been relegated at Christmas spine and class when they were down and dejected. What did he get for it? Left out of the England squad.

Then, he moves to Man United. And, before he really gets started, he gets picked for the squad. Oh, such an open mind, Sven.

I really hope he gets some kind of long term injury. Yes, I'm sour. With good reason.

It was strange, Leeds fans knew he was going and when he promised to return to Leeds (much like O'leary did) we were all like "yeah why not"...

Manchester United though... it's a shame, it's without a doubt the final insult to Leeds united.
