Hiya, Just another one of my threads that will drop like a stone once one of you kind chaps has helped me out. Here’s today’s question!

AMD 64's have come down quit a bit now, and I’m giving it some serious thought whether to get one or not. A 2800+ is only £99 which seems quite cheap - and for a man on a budget it’s quite appealing.

Intel’s are very expensive - 2.8 is still around £130 - which is 30 pound more than AMD's counterpart. Motherboards are pretty much the same price - expect I can notice one main difference. Intel Boards say Dual DDR supported, where as AMD's only say DDR 400 supported. What is the Dual DDR all about? Do I need it? Can you only have it if you have Intel?

If I was to get a AMD I would have liked this mobo http://prices.cclcomputers.co.uk/specs/motherboard/soltek/SLK8ANRL/spec.htm it’s a Soltek, but it only has two ram slots, which isn’t too good is it? But it does say HyperTransport Speed up to 1.6GHz, what’s all that about then :)?

And then there’s that there question - is there much difference between a 2800+ and a 64-bit 2800+ ? I also hear AMD's are equivalent to Intel’s lower chip. For example a 2800 might be the equivalent to a 2.5 GHz Intel. Is there any truth in that?

Any help on the subject would be great!

Have a look at the Asus A8V Deluxe Wifi-g, it currently holds the top spot as the best athlon 64 motherboard in custom pc magazine, and its slightly cheaper than the first one you mentioned. Be carefull of the socket type, at the moment i believe you can only get a 2800 as a socket 754 chip, but those are socket 939 motherboards.

Hiya again, I’ve chosen a mobo - and boy, its nice.
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=300872&cks=SER

One worry though - it says Supports up to 3500+, 3800+ Athlon 64 FX 53, or higher CPU, but there’s no mention of a 2800+, it will still work won't it?

All these questions - and a lot of them are quite dumb too, I just need to know these things before I part with my lovely 20 pound notes.

This is cheaper - by 15 smackers, but it loses the nforce. http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=608 and its red :(

Again, any help is welcomed :)

Well, they are a little faster even in 32-bit applications than the rivals, but you would have to wait for the 64-bit apps to be released before you saw the full power. Its still a worthy upgrade, but be aware that socket 939 will become the new "standard" socket.

The AMD 64 motherboards with socket 754 do not support dual ddr RAM configurations, the socket 939 boards however, do. But they are still pretty expensive, and the weediest socket 939 A64 chip would probbaly give you a heart attack.

So in short, no you dont have to have an intel to take advantage of dual ddr ram, you just need a motherboard that supports it.

Also a 2800+ AMD is equivalent to a 2.8Ghz intel. Roughly.
