but I'm not sure how the heck this works I turned it on last night to start downloading at 3am last night and nothing happened? And earlier on I set it for 9pm which was 3/4 mins ago but how can I be sure it's downloading or not?!
I believe it'll download in the background, bit by bit until the entire update is on your computer. When Windows has confirmed the entire Service Pack has been downloaded, you should get a little speach area pop up in the bottom right of your screen telling you an update is ready to install.
As this is also a new Service Pack, it may take longer to download due to everybody trying to get it as soon as it is available (USA, Europe, etc).

Same happened to me, i said i wanted to download it through Automatic Update, and 'Confirmed' it. Nothing happened. Said it would download straight away...

XP Pro service pack hasn't been released yet if that's what your using.
