Just installed everything into my new computer. Works great.

Almost.

My CD and CD-RW drives don't work.

Which sucks, because I can't install any drivers.

Ugh.

Got the IDE working, think I have the slave / master thing going OK too (one's set on the first lot and the other on the second), and the power.

But I can't find the audio cables. I think that may be causing it.

The cable that I think was connecting it before (stripped my old DELL Dimension 2400) has three plugs. (Thinking - ooh great, mobo and both drives.) Problem is, the three plugs are like this;

Plug 1 (on left end) - White, 10 pin sockets. (1 row.)
Plug 2 (in middle) - Black, two rows of ten with third left empty on bottom row. (2 rows.)
Plug 3 (on right end) - Black, 10 pins in rows of 5, missing bottom left. (2 rows.)

It would make sense that that was it... But... Doesn't work, I imagined the cable had 2/4 pin sockets not 10...

ARGH.

That's a friggin' weird cable. IDE cables are 39 pin, or rather 39 holes for pins. That's 20 x 2 with one blanked.

Get a new IDE cable.

Right, try adjusting the jumpers on the back (in between IDE and Digital Audio) to the cable select option (CS) for both drives. There should be a diagram on the drives showing you how to do this.

Now, with cable select you need to make sure you fit the IDE cable correctly. The longest length of the cable should connect to the motherboard. The middle connection should connect to the 2nd drive and then the end connection should fit into the 1st drive.

Waaah don't know what you mean...

I'm a complete n00b.

However, if you're talking about the master and slave ports (in between IDE and Digital Audio) I could always switch them round or try different ways...

Hmmmm. Are you using Primary/Secondary or cable select?

I've had it before. Some drives can be fussy and they only seem to work using one of the methods and not both.

Yep, open and close works fine.

It even detects one of them.

But not discs if inserted...

I'd very much doubt that is the problem. For a start, is the power getting to the drives. I.e. Are the lights on and can you open and close the cd trays?
