Hi there. First and foremost I’d like to point out that my Pipex has being very slow over the last few days, and its beginning to pee me off! Anybody else having this trouble? Somebody had a new phone line installed the other day over the road - maybe this could be affecting it?

Anyway, onto the question. I want to get a wireless router to share my Pipex connection on two pc’s - and possibly a laptop in the near future. Currently I’m using a USB modem to get connected - does this mean I need a USB router - or can I get one that goes straight into the master socket and feeds all the other computers with wireless network cards?

If you’re using a wireless router, what make is it, and is easy to set up?

Any router help would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers.

Router to Network card needs a Straigh cable not cross-over. Cross-over is for Network card to Network card.

Yeah you might as well connect as many computers as possible with cables as you will get a faster more stable connection to the network, and it costs less if you dont have to buy wireless network cards.

Ever tweaked the connection? Join the forums on http://www.adslguide.org.uk and ask on the Pipex section.

As Afternoon said get a router with a ADSL modem built as otherwise a normal router would have to be connected to a ADSL modem and therefore the PC with the modem must be on for any other PC to have the internet.

With a wireless router you have the choice of going wireless or through a cable. So for your 2 PCs you might want to use a network cable if you already have network cards as otherwise spending money on wireless cards will increase the cost.

Thanks Very Much - i did that test, here are my results.

Downstream 429 Kbps (53.6 KB/sec) 463 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 104 Kbps (13.0 KB/sec) 112 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Which doesnt seem bad does it?

It just tends to delay when I click on a link - now when I click it takes 5-10 seconds to respond, where as before it was pretty instant.

Have you done a Speed Test to see if this has affected your download speed?
One is available at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp

get a Wireless Router with an inbuilt ADSL Modem and you will not need additional ADSL equipment, setups vary so always read the manual
