Oh how I love this genre! Having been quite for a number of years it has recently been revisited in the form of American Pie, and Road Trip.

Basically all of these films revolve around a bunch of students, usually male, and their college lives. This is usually lots of parties, and looking for sex. And frequent encounters with the grouchy old Dean.

Classics in this genre would have to include the Porky's movies, and the fabulous Animal House.

I ask anyone that has not seen Animal House to go out and do so now. You won't be disappointed!

I'm not sure why, but this type of comedy seems to work for me, much moreso than any other. Maybe it's the angle these films always take, a bunch of lads, having a laugh. maybe it's because I discovered them after the genre had hit it's peak, so the dodgy films had already disappeared.

I think that it's going to be a genre that packs cinemas again on numerous occasions in the near future, following the success of American Pie and Road Trip. Hopefully they'll all be a good laugh, and avoid ever, ever becoming politically correct!

So what are the best college movie scenes?

From American Pie, I'd have to say the apple pie scene. I laughed until it hurt when I saw that!

Then there was that guy trying to shut Lassie up by shoving socks in her mouth in Porkys. Top stuff!

I actually saw Porky's and Animal House totally by chance when they've been on TV, so I didn't have any preconceptions. I found them both absolutely brilliant, I love that sort of stuff. Road Trip was meant to be not-that-great, and I don't really like Tom Green, so it put me off, but when I did see it I was pleasantly surprised; even the second time round it made me laugh quite hard, and TG's character is actually very funny.

No, I'm sorry I can't agree. The apple pie scene in "America Pie" has to be one of the most unfunniest moments in the whole film. In fact, a lot of the intended in-your-face shocking and ridiculous situations such as this are very rarely funny; they're just too stupid to be. Most of the best jokes or gags in "American Pie" are the more subtle ones, regarding the daft things people say and the embarassing situations. The reason for this, I think, is that most of us are able to relate to this kind of humour better than the ridiculously outrageous shocking scenes.

As for why 'college films' have phases, I would put it down to the fact that they are very limited. There's only so many times we can laugh at someone commiting a crude act, with or without them knowing. Plus, some of the humour, although sometimes funny, is a bit childish and aimed more at teenagers who's giggle chains are pulled every time someone mentions the word 'sex' or somebody, to put it politely, releases body gases.
