Yep it’s another Goatboy rant at the world – you’ve read it all before and it’ll appear again in a slightly different form in the future.
So feel free to tune out or frantically thump your “You’re Wrong Hippy” drum and attempt to drown it out.
This is how I feel, based on my experiences and my perceptions of the world.
So remember that, just a bloke on the street.
I’m not trying to convince you of anything, I’m not telling you how to think.
I don’t have to justify or quantify my post and why?
Because I’m not a Prime Minister looking for approval, so stick your weary “So you support Saddam” braindrain up your tight little, proved-wrong warmongering rightwing ass ok? My thoughts on how I see the world and how it affects me.
I’m not drafting legislation. I’m not trying to convince Joe Public to follow me in storming the Winter Palace (that one’s for you Belldandy). I’m not trying to brainwash anybody into thinking I’m right.
With that caveat in place, dear reader, I shall go outside and have a smoke and a coke to try and solidify the righteous indignation bubbling away in my headspace.

I read today about David Blunkett all but deciding to support the criminal offence of “acts preparatory to terrorism”, along with the new civil orders to restrict the activities of people linked to terrorism but who aren’t considered to be actual serious terrorist suspects.
Excuse me? Restrict the activities of people “linked” to terrorism? And how does one define that? It’s a pretty broad spectrum isn’t it, that sounds just a tad too draconian for my liking.
This is the same home secretary who was forced to drop the idea of reduced standards of proof and holding pre-emptive trials with secret evidence heard before vetted counsel. Forced by the Attorney General and Director of Public Prosecutions.
So he’s in favour of trials of people before they’ve even done anything, with secret evidence?
What the hell kind of country are we living in that this could even be allowed to reach idea stage before being vetoed?
I’d say that these terrorist groups have already won the “war” if a supposed democracy would be allowed these gross violations.
Ever read Kafka’s “The Trial”, where he never learns the nature of his offence and is simply arrested and put on trial? That sounded like nightmare fiction when that was written, but now we have our government proposing to do exactly that.
Legislation still exists that was drafted in the panicked wake of September 11th 2001, and no attempt has been made yet to alter, remove or affirm these laws.
Laws which mean people are still held without charge in our prisons, left to wallow with no promise of even a trial. The media doesn’t report these cases widely, because it would skitter the herd if we all realised that this sort of abuse was going on in our sceptered isle.
“Well they must be guilty of something” is the standard blah blah from those people that refuse to consider that the UK could ever possibly do something wrong, and if they’ve been arrested then surely there must be something to it. No smoke without fire etc etc.
And if that is your argument, I will point you to the facts of Rhuhel Ahmed, Shafiq Rasul & Asif Iqbal. Held at Guantanamo Bay prison camp for over 2 years, with allegations of torture, abuse and general misuse of military power (that’d never happen would it, nooooo. We’ll not mention the current trial of Lynndie England, that’s bad press).
“Well they were in Afghanistan, so they must have been doing something”
Yeah? So that’s why they’ve been released without a single charge is it? I didn’t see those 3 people on the 9 o’clock news lead story though.
You’d think it would merit some mention wouldn’t you? 3 Britons held without charge, allegedly abused beyond tolerance and just released with not even a “sorry”?
And if you sternly uphold the notion that we are a glorious nation fighting terrorists, then you have to abide by the decision that these men are innocent completely of any and all charges.
OR, if you think they must be guilty of something, then you have to admit to not believing the UK and USA governments when they say they are not guilty of any wrongdoings.
So which is it to be?
What if it was your brother/sister/mum/dad held without charge and just released onto the streets with no word? You’d be bloody furious.
Yet your reaction is “Well they were there”, which negates any sympathy you’ll be allowed if it should happen to you. It happened to them…ah but they’re Muslim Arab Evils, so that’s different.
Yeah? Go read some books, learn and evolve. Then we’ll talk.

And there’s the tv advert (I have yet to see) explaining the leaflet that will be coming through your door any day now to tell you what to do in the event of a terrorist attack.
And the advice offered? Buying canned goods and bottled water and remaining indoors, where all will be well, listening to the radio and awaiting further instructions.
Up. Your. Ass.
That’s as genuinely helpful as 60s American schoolchildren ducking under school desks in the event of a nuclear holocaust.
How dumb are we to think that’ll do it?
Well, we were dumb enough to believe that the advent of the year 2000 would herald planes falling from the sky, microwaves turning on their human masters and home computers hacking W.O.P.R and playing tic-tac-toe. Companies made a fortune praying on the ignorance of the herd with the Y2K BUG PANIC!!!!!! People stocked up on food and water then as well, not to mention paying babysitters hundreds of pounds to watch their kids because they wanted to go out and play. Why? If you’re that convinced the vacuum cleaner will try to kill them, why leave them alone?
We were dumb enough to set fire to paediatricians homes and cars in a blind rage at Pete Townsend and Brass Eye.
We were dumb enough to scream about Maxine Carr being released with a secret identity, despite having committed no worse crime than being stupid and in love – yet it was our stupid wildeyed nonthinking that means some assfaced would attack her in the street screaming “You scuuuuuuuuuum”
So you’ll forgive me if I take this latest “We’re here to help you” mantra from our caring and protective government wont you?
“Ah so you’d rather they do nothing” response? Beat you to it.
I’d rather they silently and professionally do what they are doing, including The Home Office repeatedly saying there has been no indication or specific threat towards the UK.
See, what people forget is that Al-Queda was around long before September 11th 2001. They could’ve hit us before, but they didn’t. And there’s still been no admittance that they were responsible for Madrid, even the Spanish media is looking at domestic groups. So why now? “Because of Iraq, Mr Cynical, that’s why”.
But Al-Queda wasn’t in Iraq. Proven fact. Stated by the CIA and MI6.
It is now though, that country has become a rallying point for every ragtag wannabe fundamentalist.
If anything has been a bigger and better recruiter for terrorists than our invasion of a country that presented no threat (not my words, your government) I’ve yet to see it.
Talk about stirring the hornet’s nest.
That country is in a worse state than when we left in ’91.
“But the Hallabjah Massacre”
*sigh* We wont go through who gave the weapons and consent and increased credit with the IMF again because it’s an old argument.
The massacres and mass graves were mostly because of the uprising we encouraged, and promptly left after promising to support. Leaving an ill-equipped civilian mob that wanted change and wanted Hussein gone dangling in the wind. Regime change? Yeah right, we walked away with a “Sorry, not our problem!!!!” wave over our shoulders so file that one in the same place you’ve put your “WMD KILL US IN 3 MINUTES!!!!” screaming that you’ve forgotten about.

I refuse to give in to this fervent attempt to make me frightened of Johnny Muslim and anybody that isn’t my immediate family.
I refuse to believe this world is evil and only a handful of white rich countries are nice safe places to live and shining beacons of virtue.
I don’t see Iraq funding and supporting coup de’tats in 3rd world countries.
I don’t see Afghanistan conducting illegal bombing raids in Cambodia (thanks Kissinger, you vile human being)
I don’t see North Korea arming, training and funding hardline Islamic Fundamentalists to fight Russians in Afghanistan to protect the opium trade-route and stop the Ruskies getting a toehold in the oil countries.
If you believe our press and any affiliated newsgroup that pumps propaganda into your home daily? The moment you step outside you are under attack from paedophiles, drug smugglers, terrorists, Muslims, immigrants, care-in-the-community maniacs, kids armed with video consoles sharpened and with murder in their eyes and a Swedish football manager that wants to have Nordic naughty with you.
For chrissakes calm down people.
Take a breath, put down your newspaper and look around you.
Nobody is trying to kill you, nobody is trying to steal your house and move 24892 Albanian refugees in, nobody is forcing your kids to worship Allah and blow you up, nobody is…
Actually, nobody is out on the streets.
We’re all locked inside, peering through the curtains trying to spot the bogeyman and his evil planebombs.
We’re all huddled around the tv being numbed with idiot soap operas, crass “reality” shows, braying audiences screaming for blood on chat shows, moron game shows where you can win fabulous prizes and every other variation on opiate you can imagine. We’re watching Ross Kemp be an SAS hero, watching Chris Ryan become an even bigger parody of Ross Kemp.
We’re all too busy buying enormous SUVs to transport our 1 fat child to his failing school where teachers are afraid to reprimand an unruly pupil in case that child either stabs teacher in the eyes or cries molestation.
We’re all too busy believing the nonsense fearmongering leaflets offering no real advice on what to do should we ever be victim to a terrorist attack.
Here’s a newsflash folks, we’ve been victims of terrorist attacks repeatedly. What, you forgot? The IRA, those guys ring any bells?
The ONLY terrorist group to successfully carry out murderous attacks on Britain. And what happens to these terrorists? They’re released from the Maze Prison at Xmas as a sign of “goodwill” and Gerry Adams is invited over for talks.
?????????
Aaaaahh, so it’s only the darkies we don’t like is it? We only dislike the ones that attack America. Ok, at least I understand now – sorry, for a moment there I thought we were involved in a “War On Terror”, I misunderstood. Fox should at least run the snazzy sexy electrical tagline “War on Darkies & Anti-US” instead, that’d make it clearer.
Because if we’re going to be liberating oppressed peoples from murderous dictactors, we would be in Zimbabwe, Rwanda and other places where genocide is occurring to this day, right now.
But hey, those people are nignogs and savages. Not nice Christian Whites like you and me huh?

Whoa whoa whoa, before you hit that “report this post” button and call me racist, take a moment to read what I wrote.
It’s only when it’s reduced to crude language does it penetrate that morass of excuses, lies and propaganda that we are suffocating under. It takes something shocking and non-acceptable to point out the ludicrous doublestandard we operate under.
So we’ll “rescue” the poor unfortunate Iraqis and free them? We’ll set them free from the shackles of oppression and offer them…well…civil war, terrorists, daily bombings, troops on the streets shooting at anything that moves, 11000 civilians killed. We’ll do that and we’ll topple a statue and drape the Stars & Stripes, saluting and weeping with patriotic erections but we wont help others that are being massacred by leaders we didn’t install, support, fund etc etc etc.
Why? Tell me why that is acceptable.
Mugabe is invited to Paris and photographed smiling with Premiers the world over?
So, again, you’ll excuse me if I gag when I see that alligator smile from Blair as he dodges issues and keeps saying “We were correct, we were correct” like some eunuch Yul Brynner in Westworld stalking Brolin & Garvey through a lush paradise.

I refuse to believe that we should be suspicious of everybody and anybody.
Belldandy wrote about people in heavy coats in the hot weather and somebody watering a plant a little too long.
Well you do that, you dwell in some 2nd-rate Clancy spy novel, distrusting anybody with a halfcaste skin and beliefs that don’t match your own.
I’ll, instead, choose to believe that 99% of this planet wants the same thing I do. Peace, tolerance, acceptance, an end to the hatred and fearmongering.
I’m aware we don’t live in an ideal work, that’s a pipedream.
What I would, more than anything, like to see is the dawning realisation that we, The West, are to blame for pretty much the hatred and anger we are now sowing – and an end to lies, supporting of puppet regimes, selling of arms to nations we know are dictatorships (East Timoor, Burma, Jakarta, Indonesia, Malaysia etc etc).
And I know this will never happen because there is too much money involved.

And that’s what this world boils down to.
Pink Floyd summed it up well in a song from Dark Side of The Moon, ‘Money’
“I’m all right Jack, keep your hands off of my stack”
There’s too much money to be made from selling this crap to people we know will use it on their own people who, ironically, mostly struggle for democracy.
But it’s not a democracy that we like, because that would mean we don’t get any contracts there. Go read about Burma, go read about our continued support to a brutal regime that practices genocide (Ethnic Cleansing – The friendly way to say genocide! It wont upset you or make your dinner stick in your throat!!!).
But it’s not just governments, it happens on a small scale daily.
I quit an ok paying job doing something I hated to go do something I want to do, something that will – for me – make a difference. And at the moment, whilst I sort everything out, I’m a postman.
And I’m damn proud of that. I do an honest days work for my money. I don’t sell people crap they don’t need, I don’t convince anybody their life would be infinitely better with our product.
That’s a horrible way to live, that’s participating in exactly the sort of rubbish that keeps this world violent and hating each other all the time.
Greed.
How much is enough? How many rooms do you need in your house, really? Why do you need that SUV? How many golf clubs can you belong to?

I know I’m not going to change the world, I know I wont make one iota of difference to anything or anybody than myself.
But I do know that I want to get through my time on this planet without causing anybody else to be upset, injured or put in fear because of my actions.
And that’s enough for me.
The End.

Yup, St Anne's is on that list.

I'm about 99.9% sure that there have actually been no drive bys in Nottingham in recent times, shootings yes, but no drive bys. Earlier in the year someone's CCTV caught a running gun battle between 2 groups of men in the early hours of the morning somewhere in Radford, if that's any help.

Stranger my other half is from Nottingham. And to be hoenst he is glad to have got away from all the gun crime there. As its still on the rise. I just dont think the government know actually how to cut down the gun crime. As for the parts of nottingham you avoid like the plague. I hope you avoid St. Annes. *Shudders at the thought of St Annes*

Now y'see, I've been at the taxi rank in a drunken stupor on many occasions, and haven't seen anything beyond the standard "Idiotic lads get drunk and angry at their complete inadequacy as human beings" jollity that is the feature of any night out in any city.

I appreciate all the comments, but what I'm after is concrete reports of drive by's. I don't doubt that there have been some but, as I say, I have my doubts as to how many.

The most dangerous place to be on a weekend night is the taxi rank at our main shopping centre and the 'villiage'.

Of course these places are about 100-200 metres away from the police station. Do you see any there? Do you f...

I live near Nottingham, regularly go into the city, and thus get the local Nottingham paper so I reckon I have a good idea of what it's like.

Never heard of an actual drive by shooting to be honest, certainly there is gun problem and Police ARV's are standard for patrol's in some parts of the city, but as gamesfreak says, it's very small areas. It's also usually the case that the gun crime is comitted by criminals (duh) against criminals. There have been very very few cases of bystanders or just ordinary people being caught in the crossfire.

On the other hand there are large parts of Nottingham that you don't want to be alone in at anything approaching dusk...not if you value anything of value on you!
