Your ISP should tell you but ultimatly it will work before they say it is live due to the delay from BT Onsite Technichians reporting back to the Wholesale department before then informing the ISP, without the microfilter you will notice background noise when they start to install the ADSL.

No everything would work. Phones work even without microfilters, ADSL works with out microfilters. Microfilters allow the phone and ADSL to be used at the same time. If microfilters werent used the ADSL would lose sync with the exchange everytime someone used the phone.
The only way to tell if the line is activated is to set up the router, modem etc and once ADSL is enabled it will show up on your hardware. No harm in setting it all up now.
What 2Mb have you gone for? Because the only cheap one I know of is PlusNet. I am with Pipex 1Mb at the moment and I am happy as I pay £28.95 as I had it on special which is cheaper than PlusNet on there 1Mb price as well as most other places if not all of them, for there uncapped service. But in October my 1Mb will increase to £33.99 or what ever Pipex charge and if that happens I will move off to PlusNet to their 1Mb and then upgrade to their 2Mb for £39.99.
So could you let us know what PlusNet is like and what the speeds are like.
