Tiago to miss Olympic event
Mourinho to make Tiago plea
Chelsea's Tiago Mendes has been left out of Portugal's Olympic team because of a recurring groin problem.
"There was a worsening of an old injury which Tiago suffered," said Portugal team doctor Joao Resende.
"In order to recover he would need more preparation time, which we do not have. Given this situation, we decided to spare him."
Portugal's Olympic squad also includes Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo and Fulham's Luis Boa Morte.
Last month, the Portuguese Football Federation turned down a request by Chelsea and Manchester United to spare the 23-year-old Tiago and Ronaldo from the forthcoming Athens Games.
The English-based players could miss two weeks of the Premiership season if Portugal manage to reach the Olympic football final on 28 August.
Tiago was signed from Benfica by the Stamford Bridge club for £8m.

At least it was Portugal who discharged him rather than us making up the injury like fergie does, but at least Tiago will be back sooner, while Cristiano is enjoying the greek sunshine!
:P
But, I'm sure they could time it better than to have it clash with the start of several of Europe's biggest domestic leagues?
I mean, surely, it should be actually during the Summertime, rather than at the very-end? Right?
The brilliance of supporting a small club, no-one ever gets called up! ;-)
