Just a few minutes ago I sat down here at my desk and decided I'd stick on some 80's music. And what would be the first song to come on, but "The Power of Love" from one of my favourite films ever.

Yes its Back To The Future, and unless I am much mistaken (which happens a lot) then the DVD doesn't even have a release date planned yet.

This is total idiocy on the part of whoever decides what to release. Can you imagine how great it would be to walk into your local music shop (or special reserve) and see the entire trilogy of films sitting in a lovely shiny box with loads of extras and all sorts of other bits and bobs.

It would make my week! And there's not much that can make my week any more as all the bond films have now been released.

So anyway, after I'd returned from my dream world and got back to reality, I decided that there are a lot of great films which we can look forward to getting on DVD.

Old classics, which deserve a release on the format simply because they were so great in their day. Most of them still are great, just as long as you don't mind if they look nothing like the matrix or titanic.

Superman is a big one thats just come out in the U.S. on region 1. They have the first film out with loads of extras, and the others are also there but for some reason not in special edition form yet. I guess they must be taking their time in getting them just right. Which is fair enough - I have nothing against perfectionism.

Just in case you're interested, below is a list of the extras for the first film......

Theatrical Trailer
Previously Unseen Footage Added by Director Richard Donner
4 Behind-The-Scenes Documentaries: 'The Magic Behind the Cape' (Special Effects), 'Making Superman: Filming the Legend' (Production and Release)
'Screen Tests' (Casting)
'Taking Flight: The Development of Superman' (Preproduction)
Feature-Length Audio Commentary by Director Richard Donner and Creative Consultant Tom Mankiewicz
Superman and Lois Lane Screen Tests
Audio Outtakes: Alternate Scoring for 8 Sequences
Music-Only Audio Track (Dolby 5.1) showcasing John Williams' Magnificent Score
2 Deleted Scenes

Whether all these will still be present for our release, I'm not sure, but if they have any sense then it will all be intact and splendid!

Oh and they have been good enough to bring out a box-set of all four films - another good idea. But by the looks of things it contains the non-special edition versions of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th films. Be careful! We wouldnt want any shouting or tears.

I have no idea when all this lot will be coming out on Region 2, but I'm sure the advertising will sprout up everywhere when they do.

So we have Back to the future on our list of wants. And Superman. Does anyone else have any good ideas for what we want next?

Short Circuit is on its way. As is Robocop. Oh and The Goonies will be arriving soon as well! That's going to sell like hot cakes.

If anyone reading this hasn't seen The Goonies, then you are missing out on a major piece of film history. It has everything from the truffle shuffle to one eyed Willie's.

I'll now have to cut this post a bit shorter than normal, just because you all need time to reply and state your case for the films we need on DVD.

And if the replies don't get into double figures I will not be amused!

;)

The thing with classics is that you can't just release them whenever you like. You have to wait for the right moment, that won't just attract the original fans, but some new ones too.

Normally an anniversary suits these things just fine. Rocky is fast approaching it's 25th Anniversary. If I remember rightly, this is when the DVD's will be released for it, as it'll get more publicity if they say something like "25 years later, are you ready to go the distance?"

I imagine that the Back to the Future DVD's will probably wat a while, until the original film has an anniversary, or something like that.

And by the way, Back to the Future 2 was the best in the series.

The excellent US edition of Robocop, with some fantastic extras, is a Region 0 release, which means that you can play it in any DVD player. The Superman boxset you mentioned looks really cool as well, with silver coated box, reminding me of those limited edition comic days of yore, when they really were limited editions.

I'd like to see the Stand, currently out in the US, but most of the other films I'm after are already coming out here; Pretty Woman and Ghost are two that will be appearing shortly and a new version of Close Encounters is also due soon.
