ive been playing the online demo of unreal tournament 2 lately and its great so i want to get one mainly for online play, i know there are a lot of them so i suspect the later ones are better.

Unreal Tournament 2004 is apparently pretty good. Never played it myself though.
Yeah the latest one is normally the best (2004), but if I was you I would just go counter strike source.
UT2004, seeing as the 2003 addition doesn't come with vehicles and has the Assault mode missing. The 2004 edition also has a very decent selection of mods available for it.
