So, how far have cars come over the past decade or so? Not far? Ok, we’ve improved brakes, with the addition of ABS. Car safety has improved, most cars now have passenger airbags too, some even have rear and side airbags. Cars crumple easier, so in a collision, it will not hurt the driver so much. Car design has improved, with even family saloons looking more attractive! And security has improved a little, with new immobilisers, and some cars being linked to a satellite theft system.

But where is the new technology? Global positioning, so you can see where you are, and where to go. This is a big step forward, people no longer relying on maps, they appear on the dashboard. But the technology side has not improved dramatically.

But we are in the digital age now! Cars need more useful technology. The citroen advert says ‘technology as it should be - 100% useful’ - I agree! The new citroen has Emergency braking assistance (Which does a lot less than the advert makes out); it reads the road, digitally sensing the surface. But the really innovative thing is the lights, which by sensing the light around them, work automatically. And the windscreen wipers, which feel impact upon them, and also work automatically. But these things are merely trivial!

So, the next generation of car is undergoing final testing. But what will it have?

SECURITY.

The next generation of cars will not use keys. The new BMW has a small digital device, which locks into a port on the car. It has 19 layers of passwords on it, so it will need a hacker, not a car thief to steal one!
The new alarms will be silent, but will alert the driver, via mobile phone, internet or other devices, and will also notify the police. I assume, if the driver does not cancel the alarm, (which will be obviously going off to the driver) the police will become involved. But the thing I like the most, is the fact that a remote controlled engine immobiliser, controlled only by the car manufacturer, can stop a car thief in his tracks!

DRIVING

Now this is simply amazing! The minor improvements include the car being ‘beamed’ a speed limit, which appears on the digital dashboard. If a driver exceeds the limit, the car automatically slows down, whether you like it or not! Much the same as on a game, when the GPS receiver locates a corner, which you are about to come to, an arrow appears on your digital display.
Some GPS receivers can be programmed to show a specific route from A to B right? Now your car will use this and DRIVE FOR YOU! The GPS unit gives detailed information and maps of the route you wish to take. This is downloaded onto the cars computer before you set out, for processing. Now, this is the clever bit. A load of sensors and cameras, of a minute size, positioned around the car will help it to drive.
By using a method similar to sonar, the computer will be able to tell how far away an object is. The computer will work out if the object is moving, it’s size, and it’s speed. It will compare this to what the GPS download says SHOULD be there, and works out if it is an obstacle or a car. The car ensures it keeps a safe distance from all objects. Although the car can sense where the road goes, it is hoped ‘cats eyes’ will be digitally programmed to send signals to cars to make sure they stay in lane! The brakes are also controlled by this system.
The windscreen wipers, lights, and windscreen wipers will all be CPU controlled. Of course, there is a manual override for all functions, because now cars are open for viruses!

STEREO etc.

In the BMW model, the ‘key’ controls all functions. It has a left, right, up down control system, which reacts with a menu in the car. You will be able to activate the stereo, sunroof, air conditioning, and possibly even the drinks holders! Because the menu is high on the dashboard, the driver can still concentrate on the road!

‘CHIPPING’

All cars have a central processor. This can now be ‘chipped’ in much the same way as a playstation. Your CPU can be removed, and re-programmed by specialists! They isolate the areas that control specific areas, and tune up your car. They can change brake responsiveness, change suspension configuration, and even the power of the headlights! By plugging into your cars maintenance port, patches can be uploaded directly into your car!

FUEL

All current cars run on petrol or diesel. Not any more! The cars of the future will run on electricity, so you can refuel your car from home! At the moment, 500 miles - worth can cost as little as £1! Fuel consumption will be less, though unfortunately, these cars have only a short range on one charge. Obviously, this change in fuel will also help the environment, with no pollution!

CONCLUSION

I think it is safe to say that in the future, cars will be mainly run by computers. Driving will be safer, easier, more fun, and ‘greener’. Soon you really will be able to just ‘sit back and enjoy the ride!’

The idea of the

Firstly, the alarm is only silent for the first 1 minute, to aler tthe police. So they are on their way before the burgalar gets scared off. this way, if he does a runner, he's likely to be caught easier.

You would obviously have an override for the immobiliser lockout. You wouldn't drive along with the alarm going off if it was your car would you? So thats not a problem.

Being in the cinema? If you are in the cinema at the moment, you wouldn't hear your car alarm from the car park anyway would you? So this is wrong too!

I agree, a normal home computer system is not reliable. OIt crashes. But the in-car computer is designed for this purpose. It does not have loads of different games and things on to cause conflicts!

And there is always a human override to technology!

It is a little bit revoloutinary. No more fumbling for the A/C causing accidents on the road. Come to think of it, it could be voice activated!

This is the internal running of the car. It is a little like overclocking a PC. Get it to run the same as a high-spec car on a medium spec one. Push the engine past what its security guidlinews tell it too, but withing safe parrameters etc.

They WILL be able to make it last longer, but at the mo, it is a problem!

I don't thing your car of the future will work.

Firstly the security bit.

Silent alarms being sent to the police could work, but remember that a lot of car alarms seem to go off for no apparent reason. I don't want the police invovled here. I would not want to be woken up by my mobile either in the middle of the night, and what if the break-in is when you are at the movies. I don't wan't the police invovled because I don't get the message.

The idea of the alarm is that people in the areas know about the break-in if there is one. Also if the manufacturer has control of the immobiliser, when what happens if you have a problem getting through to the manufacturer? In this case you would be without a car while you are waiting to get a reply.

The electronic lock could work, but I'm sure that their is someway of getting in.

I only just trust my computer not to crash while I write this, so I would not trust it to navigate to my destination, while avoiding other road users. A computer would not be flexible enough to anticipate the movements of other drivers, some of whom are also computers. Slowing the car down automatically if you break the speed limit is also dangerous, as if you are speeding in the middle of an overtaking manoevre, braking coul dcause you to crash into the car behind.

The only reason that autopilot works in the air is that in the air the pilot knows when planes are coming close, and the system is regulated, to prevent planes getting too close. Also air traffic is less congested, and there are few obstacles to worry about in the air, especially above the clouds. The pilot keeps a close watch on things to make sure that autopilot is working.
